here is a couple quick pics

What temps is it getting up to? What water pump and housing are you running? I have the same radiator, fans, and pulley setup as you and it didn't like certain water pumps. It took a couple water pump and thermostat swaps to get it right.

I'm in San Jose, CA. Definitely not anywhere near as hot as Texas. But I've had the car in some 100+ heat a bunch of times and it stayed nice and cool.

The problem with the pulley setup is March Performance recommends the incorrect pump for a/c applications. So hopefully D69charger's issue was like like mine and can be fixed with a pump swap.

I believe its the stock pump housing and an edelbrock water pump in it.  I don't remember buying a new pump or housing when the march system was put on.  I had a buddy do it for me as I had moved long distance here to texas and sold off everything that didn't fit in my charger and drove it here.  The temps have gotten up to 230 before I shut it down and let it cool off.... and the gauge seems to keep creeping up as I drive down the highway.  Not much of stop and go driving around here.  I wouldn't have the march system on it... but between the 2 shops I had my car at... pieces went missing.

cdr

do you have the seal that clips under the hood & seals off at the radiator core supports?

that CAN cause running hot, without it , hot engine side heat can be drawn across the top of the core supports & then the fan sucks hot air through the radiator.
my car is a resto mod so I did mine like this.

How did you make that?  My car isn't a number matching or anything like that... I just want it to run right so I can enjoy it.  By the way... your motor sounds sweet... and I bet if I had your gear ratio I would have the traction issues too

cdr

i made it out of a big black cow feed supplement container LOL TRUE STORY.  any good plastic will work, just make sure the screws are short so the headlights will still open   :)

well we have a farm here with cattle... so finding something like that would be simple, LOL.  I just need to figure out how to make this car run cool enough to enjoy.  If the weather outside is nice and cool the car is fine... but 90-100 degree heat... I cant do a far drive with it.

I think the pump might be your issue? Edelbrock has all theirs listed as high flow so I think yours is spinning too fast. Did the car originally have a/c or was it added on later?

I could be wrong but my car did almost the exact same thing.  :shruggy:

cdr, what water pump are you running? I'm diggin the radiator cover.   :2thumbs:

D69charger

do your guys lower rad hose have a metal spring in it?

cdr

mine does not, but i am going to add one just to be safe.in the summer it has enough pressure to keep the hose open, but now that it is getting cooler it may  collapse.

Mine does. Had to add it though, I don't think anyone offers a hose with the spring anymore.

Did the car run cool before the a/c was added?

The March a/c pulleys are sized so they can spin faster to match the rotation speed of a non a/c setup. So with a high flow pump designed for non a/c cars spinning faster than it normally would is either moving the coolant too fast to be cooled by the radiator or is creating an air pocket that basically stops the flow in the pump housing causing it to overheat. cdr's pulleys probably are sized to work with his setup and the 440 source pump but with mine the March pulleys were causing problems with a high flow pump.

You could also run the car up to temp with the radiator cap off and check to see how the coolant is flowing once the thermostat opens up. If the coolant is moving too fast then you know the pump is not allowing the radiator to properly cool the coolant.

a/c has always been on the car since I first started driving it but I had stock v-belt pulleys on it.  during my motor rebuild those pulleys went missing at one of the shops.  the march pulleys are not a serpentine setup... 1 belt runs power steering and a/c and another one runs the alt and water pump.
