but who would buy one new ?  :scratchchin: What customer walks in a dealership and actually wants a Charger with a six? and a three speed at that ! :brickwall:  I could see a base coronet maybe or an A body, but a sleek stylish Charger ?? :eek2:  what's the fuel mileage difference between a six and a 318 ? :slap:  what other reason would a customer want a six?  :icon_smile_angry:

Thanks for sharing  :2thumbs:

You make all valid points. My guess would be an elderly lady who wants something spunky but nothing with too much power so she's not afraid to drive the car. The 3 speed on the tree would be her being economical and not wanting a floor shift.

That's the only thing I could think of. :shruggy:

Same reason someone would buy a New Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger with 3.5l

think that's the third  , slant six charger that's come up for sale in the last couple of months  :scratchchin:

some crazy optioned chargers were built  back in the day  :yesnod:

Car Business 101:  There is an ass for every seat.

Likely used as a "lost leader".  Advertise a Charger for less than a Coronet.

Also, a lot of memories are fogged, but back when gas was $.30/gallon it was still a piece of the family budget.  Most people managed it with driving habits, but, I know engined size was factored in by others.

With a buy it now of 17k should this be added to the delusional sellers thread? It has no motor and needs work

There were 906 /6 Dodge Chargers made in 1968 according to the production number data.  Cut that number in half for 1969 and again in half for 1970.  (Third generation /6 Dodge Chargers are even rarer.)  So yes, it is a rare Charger...

I doubt that it was an special ordered car for a buyer.  More than likely a dealer demo car to bring people into the dealership with a low price in their newspaper/radio ads (like StripeDelete mentioned previously).  I know that this was the case in 1970 as they lowered the price for a bare bones 1970 /6 Dodge Charger (XH29C0GXXXXXX) to $3,0001.00 in dealership ads.  (I have a copy of the ad to display with my car.)  That way when a person showed up interested in the car, they would them try to tag on other options to add to the selling sticker price (and their pocketbook).  Most of the second generation /6 Dodge Chargers lived hard lives and few of them survive intact, as no one thought of them as anything special.  Back when they were just used cars, many of them became parts cars for RTs or used for hot rod fodder.  The funny thing is that if you look at a certain collector's value guide, they suggest a 25% deduction in value from a regular 318 Charger for the factory /6.  I do not believe that this is actually true, as there are people who actively seek them out.  That does not mean that they are as valuable as an RT or even a 383-2bbl. version Dodge Charger from the same year.  Remember, they are rarer than most factory 426 hemi or 440 six pack cars though (so they do stand out in a car show)....

As for the price:

Yes, I agree that 17K is quite a bit for it....

I agree its over priced by 10-12k, but it looks like a very solid project....Look at that trunk pan.  :scope:

Yes, I know I have too many cars. My wife reminds me daily.

Well, if the slant six is as indestructible as some people claim, maybe the original owner wanted something durable... but then still managed to kill it

last I heard, there have been 9 of the /6 3spd column shift cars that have surfaced...I had a chance to get one up here long ago,, it's still around, wish I had got it

Rare doesn't mean valuable. Filet Mingnon and chuck can both be served rare, which would you prefer. I still like to look at the leanin' tower of power in there when I see it. They belong in dusters, not Chargers.

A383Wing

if you put a fully restored /6 manual trans charger side by side with a fully restored R/T, I'm betting the little /6 car would be more popular at car shows

1974dodgecharger

Have to remember back then no one looked at these cars as a collectable they were meant to driven and as long as they had a, 'dodge' they liked it slant 6 or hemi didn't matter to them they wanted the dodge charger back then.  Unlike people now these days they are trying to buy things that they might think are, 'collectable' 30 years from now as an investment.  Back then people just wanted the cars and loved them for what they were, 'cars' not an investment.  YES we see those one or 5 five cars that sell for 2 millions dollars and were never driven, but that was rare and far in between.

I agree, the /6 Charger would get more attention at a car show.  It has happened in a way a few years ago when I showed mine against a 1969 Charger 383-2bbl., a 1969 GTX and a 1969 M code Superbee at a local rod run.  The comparison cars were restored examples, while mine is rough and rusty to say the least.  People tended to gravitate towards the lowly /6 for some reason.  Those who are in the know in Mopars were surprised there was one left complete.  Unfortunately, I also had to deal with the run of the mill comments, some who wanted me to convert it into a General Lee, F&F clone or to "Hemi" it.  Not going to happen....

Does anybody know how much extra it was to get the 318 vs. the /6 when new?  With the amount of 318 cars sold, I'm kind of surprised there weren't more /6 chargers sold than there were?  :shruggy:

In 1969, the MSRP difference between the Charger Six (/6) and the Charger V8 (base engine 318) was $106.

$3,003  vs.  $3,109 respectively

I am the proud (no-really!) owner of 2 slant 6 muscle cars.  My daily driver is a numbers matching '71 Challenger A93 "Deputy" option car, Slant 6 /904, 46K original miles.  No console, no rear window regulators or cranks, just chrome plugs, wood grain wheel.  That's it.   I will tell you that thing gets a ridiculous amount of attention because it IS a /6, and only maybe 1 in 10 tell me I should change it out for a big block...

Number 2 is my '68 Charger.  Original slant and K-frame are long gone, but by the tag and VIN, slant 6, 904.  I have a slant power train (/6, 904, K-frame) sitting there for it, but in the mean time I have a 5.9/46RE out of a '98 RAM wedged in there for some Silver State runs and daily driving duties.

When I take my zero option '66 and my hemi four speed '66 to shows, the zero option car seems to get more interest.  A lot more people ask questions about the no option car. A lot of people are surprised that you could get a Charger with three on the tree, bucket seats and and a console.  I like it because it's unusual but that doesn't make it more valuable to someone else.

Most of the second gen three speed cars I've seen are 318 powered and most of the six banger cars I've seen are automatics.  Slant six three speed left original are probably real rare.  My kid brother almost bought a used '68 six cylinder Charger with three on the tree back in 1971 when they were just used cars.  I remember it was white with a black vinyl roof.  My dad wouldn't let him buy it because it was a "Charger" and that was back when he was 17 and needed parental approval.  I'd like to find that car now.

first: there are NO /6 B or E-body muscle cars  :slap: the '68-'71 225 with its 1bbl isn't flexing any "MUSCLE"

The /6 was introduced for the spring of '68 with a new low price for the entry level Charger.  The earliest /6 Charger (XP29B8B304511) I've seen is first week of March '68, and every '68 /6 Charger I've seen info on is from "B" Hamtramck, MI - does anyone know of a '68 /6 Charger from the St. Louis plant?

Nice pair of /6 cars. :2thumbs:  Now you just need a convertible /6 version.....

I would keep the /6 Challenger original, very few of them left intact.  :Twocents:
