I'm really not willing to risk it on this car, if I get a lift it will be a 4 post lift for the garage, pricewise even a grand more would be a better buy in my eyes.  I can just see starting to lift it on a scissor lift and have it nose over on me.  I should have bought a lift for my garage by now, I keep putting it off...pretty soon I won't want to work on them enough to justify it.

I've used HF items in the past, and have not been totally satisfied with the quality of some of the items.  If you think stuff is disposable after a few uses, HF is ok, but I start looking elsewhere on pricy items, looking for better quality.

No truer words have been spoken.  Lather, rinse, dispose... the HF motto.

Agreed, tools that I will use once or twice I can't see paying Snap-On (example) prices for.
However there are several items that I purchased I am extremely happy with. I bought a compressor that has been great and works like a charm.
Engine stand, they either work or don't work and this is fine except it doesn't roll as good as I'd like. But none do with a 440 on them.
But again, I have to agree, something like a lift that I would be under, especially that scissor lift, I don't think so.   :shruggy:

I did a quick search and I found that the price at Harbor Freight really wasn't all that much lower than many other vendors...I would keep looking and do your home work.  Just because they are close to you doesn't mean they are the best option.....

A Superbird is very tricky up front to get jack stands under  because the nose and  skid plate on the K frame I  thought it would be  easier and safer with a lift just to get  it high enough to put on stands.

When buying a scissor lift pay close attention to the height when fully lowered. I have to drive my car up on 2X6's to clear the lift.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

I absolutely hate putting my car on stands.  I'm sweating bullets until it's done.  Two weeks ago one of my smaller stands snapped and dropped the car, yay more damage.   ::)

There's several lifts I'd be happy with but I can't justify the cost nor do I have a ton of space to spare.  I'm thinking of getting 4 ramps to drive the car up to and raise it on stands from there.  It gets old having to remove the chin spoiler every time I need to raise the car.

You are correct on that one. My uncle has the harbor freight scissor lift and he had to build concrete runners for his car to drive up on to get it upon the lift. He drives a 56 t-bird. But he does love that lift. It helped him replace some floor areas.

Whenever I need to lift the whole car for something it most likely would be to remove a trans. or deal with the exhaust system. In those cases the car needs to be supported on the four corners.

Getting the car up on jack stands can be done just fine from front to back with a good floor jack.

I can see a bit of convenience with a car lift like that for working on the suspension but it's just a matter of getting the car off the ground and I don't see a need big enough to move me to buy one. It would likely sit in the corner and take up space like many things I don't need.

I guess it would be nice to do the lower doors and rockers with, but otherwise its just another tool to have in the quiver. After all, its all about using the right tool for the job. Usually-if not always- these lift have a mechanical lock to keep it from falling. As long as it has a safety you should be fine, your not going to get smushed raising and lowering it.  :Twocents:

I guess it is like just about anything in this life, you get what you pay for.  The those "cheap" items have a place as long as safety is key.
It is interesting though, there is a thread on another forum about distributors. And one (IMHO) that is way overpriced because of a name. Sometimes you pay for a name, but is it really any better than another that works the same. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but rare. And those companies know it is good but want still to be compensated well over what the real worth is.
I don't know if I am making any sense to anyone, only to point out paying way more is not always getting more for your dollar.   :Twocents:

Very true.   Paying for a name and not necessarily quality is very real with some products.   Harley Davidson comes to mind and so does the wonderful iPhone junk.   They (especially Harley Davidson) are not exactly none for reliability and it's a shame.    :rotz:
Harbor freight has good stuff and bad stuff so just do your homework.   I'd love to have a lift but would never justify having one that was expensive.   This lift could be justified as long as it's safe and solid.
I say go for it.    :2thumbs:

Lifts are not as bad as you may think considering what you get.
I was seriously looking at these once.

I thought about a HF lift too, but I don't have a level driveway.  I have been thinking about getting these two piece race ramps instead.

http://www.amazon.com/Race-Ramps-RR-56-2-56-Ramp/dp/B003ZAGI9E/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1438611497&sr=1-1&keywords=race+ramps

Nice because one of the downsides to most ramps is limited access from the side.

They have an even longer set for lower cars.  I have a set of metal ramps but they always skid on my driveway giving me a heart attack.   I also always worry I will go off the front as there isn't a big stop like on these.
