A guy I work with claims it's coming out.  I told him Plymouth does not exist anymore. How can this be and is it true ?

from what i heard (rumors)

Dodge bought the cuda name a few years back

from what i heard, the challenger hellcat, or challenger will be renamed cuda?

maybe they will come out with a new platform and call it "cuda"

i do know that dodge bought up alot of those "old school names"

ACUDANUT

I don't know how Dodge can buy a Plymouth's name. I thought if someone, like Fiat bought Chrysler, they get all the entitles or whatever.  :shruggy:

A Dodge Cuda has been rumored for at least 5 years now. I'll believe it when I see it, which will most likely be never.

JB400

This car is supposed to replace the Avenger, and is rumored to be rear wheel drive.  Potential engines would be the 4 cyl. engines in the Dart, and the corporate 3.6L v6.  Whether it'll be called Cuda, Avenger, or some other name, has yet to be determined.

Well, you know, if it's on Facebook or Wikipedia (or a blog written by some nameless dude) it must be true! Chrysler wouldn't want to lose ownership of the name because then they can't charge licensing/royalty fees - even if they NEVER make another car with that name.

However, they have slapped "Daytona" and a wing on a truck as well as used "R/T" to mean so many different things that no one really knows what it stands for these days. Most of their target demographic thinks all this stuff is new and half the dyed-in-the-wool Mopar fans will buy anything tied to the past so it will work if they did manage to stick a badge on a car.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

ACUDANUT

Well, If it really has a 'Cuda body, I'm in.  :2thumbs:

Ghoste

I can see it more likely being a trim option on the Challenger than anything else.

Not necessarily.

Long story short: you can own a trademark without ever registering it, as long as you can show that you've been using it in commerce and people associate it with the product - and Chrysler has never really stopped licensing toys, t-shirts, posters, etc. so its never been in danger of losing ownership and/or right to use or royalties.

Registering it (as Chrysler did with the 'cuda name a few years ago) simply formalizes it and gives it the presumption of validity - and it gets the cool "®" symbol. Its a CYA move and may mean nothing.

There is not going to be any new Barracuda.  I talked to Ralph Gilles and Tim Kuniskis about this.  They aren't doing it for 3 reasons.

1) They never got the "Barracuda" or "Cuda" name back from All American Racers.

2) They conducted what they call a "sniff" test to see about name recognition.  The Challenger is a much more known and hyped name in modern culture, while the Barracuda and Cuda are not.  They are known among collectors and car people.  But not as well known in the general public.

3) Plymouth is dead

That's what they directly told me.  They did not rule it out at some future time if they are able to ever get the name back.  But until that happens, the Cuda is dead.

You know what this means ....we will probably get that ultra rare 4 door cuda.....

Cuda wagon with a hellcat motor......base it on a challenger body style

a cuda/challenger wagon (like the magnum) with a hellcat motor. 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. 1/4 mile in 11.5

all while having seating for 6-8 people

And there's certainly nothing wrong with sniff tests.     :2thumbs:

ACUDANUT

They would have to call it a "Chrysler" 'Cuda.

#2 is what matters.

A company the size of Mopar, even in bankruptcy, would not hesitate to buy back the name if they wanted it.  And I doubt they would let the Plymouth roots stand in their way either.

Ghoste

I wasn't aware they had sold it, was that part of the original deal with Gurney or did it come later>

Can we predict the comments that would come from a new car with the name Cuda? ---And if it had four doors?-- :slap:

Even if the name Plymouth was resurrected along with it their would be lots of complaints. Especially so if it fell short of what the new challenger has.

Also -IMO- it's not likely that todays owners of the corporation would invest in competing cars within the corp. as they did "back in the day"

I am a big fan of dodge and the charger. Those names mean something to me that came from a different time. The new charger (for example) is not what comes to my mind when I hear the name. If someone names a child after a parent or grand parent it is no more than a tribute to a different person. :Twocents:

It would be cool to sometime in the future see and hear what takes place at meetings that decide these things.  Would a marketing specialist grab the day with an old name for the new buyers? :scratchchin:

At the time they wanted it to be a "SRT 'Cuda".  But that obviously changed.  And it was never going to be a Chrysler.  Chrysler had no interest in a muscle car.  A Muscle Sedan aka 300 SRT, but it was never in their wheelhouse.

Gurney got the rights to the "Barracuda" and "Cuda" name sometime in the 80's when Chrysler let their ownership of the names lapse, and he never let go.  They did try buying it back in the mid-2000's, even suing him for it.  But they lost and he kept the names.

bull

I hate to ask the obvious question but is there anything illegal about using the Plymouth name even though the "company" doesn't exist? Everyone's getting hung up on the name but I really don't see a reason why they can't use it if they own it. Plymouth Cuda with a little "by Dodge" or "by Chrysler" emblem on the car somewhere.

1974dodgecharger

think anyone really cars if its called, 'dodge cuda', 'dodge barracud' NOPE.....people do not care about its history look at the charger....4 doors still an awesome car, but people who, not all, don't even recongnize the old charger is 2 doors they claim charger started in 07 with 4 doors.....

so no matter what they name...it will, 'WIN" and work......

I don't buy this rumor either.

Putting the Cuda name on the car doesn't do anything for them today that the Chally name doesn't do better.

Outside of muscle car circles the Cuda name is not well-known.  And it doesn't test as well as Chally as an unknown name either.
