Since the weather here in Ct. has gotten above freezing the last few days, I've been thinking (actually dreaming) about driving my Charger. I've wanted to actually drive (not trailer) my R/T to Chryslers at Carlisle since I bought it a few years back.
How many of you actually drive your Charger or other Mopars to Carlisle?
Now I'm not looking for this thread to digress into, why its stupid to drive a classic car because of value, reliabilty etc. If that is your opinion, fine, your entitled to it.
I am looking to hear how many people drive their Charger or other Mopar to Carlisle?

I've been thinking about driving to Vegas as well; that'd be about the same miles round trip for me...

I drove my 67 to Carlisle for 8 years. Last year I drove my 73.
Each year I drive one to Moparfest. And twice I have driven to Auburn Hills for the show at CEMA with the 67.
To answer your next question, we live in Central NY state.

I drive mine as well...its a 200 mile, 3-ish hour drive each way for me from Staten Island, NY...wouldn't have it any other way ;)

Ive done it at least 9 times and only had problems 1 year with throwing off the crappy reproduction fan belts I had on the car one year.  The key is to leave nice & early in the day to avoid traffic & the heat!

One of these years I will. It's ~470 miles one way and in the commuter it's an 8hr trip. So driving the Charger would be a LONG day. I know that I have LOTS of work to do on her before it's going to be something I can do. I bought a truck last year so for the time being it will be towed! I'm just happy to be there with my Charger!! It should be a whole new experience this year.

NHCharger has driven his down several times over the years I have driven down to the show. He typically drives half way down on Wednesday evening and then gets there early Thurs. Drives the whole way back on Sunday. It's a long trip. His feedback to me over the years always contains 2 words... noisy and hot.

One of these days, would like to make it to Carlisle.   I have put about 5,000 miles on my Charger with 2 years going on the Hot Rod Power Tour, and some local driving. :2thumbs:
My name is Mike and I'm a Moparholic!

Have driven my 500 over there three times. 660 miles each way.

Carlisle, no.  But I do plan on driving it to Daytona for the turkey rod run sometime in the next few years.  Gotta get it on road first, and working on that now.  The whole point in getting it roadworthy is to see it on the road again.  Pretty sure it will be just as hot and sweaty as it was when I was 17 driving from Pensacola FL to Kissimmee FL.

If I would go yes I would drive it.  I love long trips in it, especially with functioning a/c.   :icon_smile_big:

I've driven the car for about 7 hours straight, only stopping for gas and a bite to eat.  No problems, not even in the 40 minute bumper to bumper part in 90 degree weather.  These cars will do you right if you return the favor.   :2thumbs:

It is funny you mention the A/C Dino.  When were were looking for a second Charger, I purposely skipped over anything that did not have factory A/C, mainly for Carlisle.
It is SO nice not being soaked from sweat on the really hot trip down.  Even though the 67 has GREAT ventilation with the vents open that flow through to the flaps in the back, it gets warm in he seats.
I will say this however, the 67 is WAY more comfortable for long trips than the 73. Easier to drive, quieter ... ot just goes on it's own if you know what I mean. I sometimes wish that had A/C but it is what it is.  :2thumbs:

Dino

I had to have a/c as well, altough I could probably install an aftermarket unit if it didn't come stock.  I don't mind being a little warm on a trip, but I don't like being soaking wet either.   :eek2:

I don't think I've ever had one of my Chargers at Carlisle. I have driven one of my Challengers and my Barracuda. It's about 8 hours away. I driven the turquoise 68 Charger, the Barracuda, and the yellow Challenger to Monster Mopar (5 hours) and the Challenger and Power Wagon to the Nats (2 hours). None of them had A/C. The most miserable trips were a few years ago when it was 96 degrees with high humidity for both Carlisle and the Nats and I took the yellow Challenger (440 Six Pack, black interior) to both. Chargers have a LOT more air movement inside with all the windows down. E bodies have almost none.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ok, I'm in Seattle and 2,700 miles from Carlisle but I've always wanted to drive a Charger there (really my plan is to take a couple months off and do a full 10-12,000 mile lap of the US).  I'm working on it - got a decent sized garage now and working getting that in shape and setting up the work space.  The car is next on the list, then restore, then testing reliability, etc.

But...showing the car is a small part of the desire, but way more so for me is part about driving there.

I'll probably end up spending a couple of thousand hours restoring the car and I want to get my time and money out of it.  Sitting in a lawn chair beside it at shows doesn't count all that much in my book.  On the Charger I did way back when I spent around 2,200 hours on it and maybe 200 hours driving it.  I'd like to get the ratio more favorable next time around.  The restoration time isn't nothing, but it isn't full-fare time like driver-seat time.

I think it is amazing how as you get older, you plan everything out, and prepare endlessly to ensure a trip goes as planned.  When we were young, if the car ran, even on 7 cylinders and the alignment was off, I'd hop in and drive her wherever I wanted to go.  I've been preparing my charger now for almost 10 years  to be a reliable means of transport, and still haven't got it on the road.  Even back in the old days the headlight doors didn't work and I had to jump out and swap vacuum lines to open and shut them (still gotta fix this today).  Back then a little hot air in the face was plenty to cool me off, nowadays I have to have working air conditioning or I'll melt or worry about heatstroke.  I think its time we went back to our days of old, and started jumping in and driving them, if they run they will probably get you there, may have to stop and fill with water a few times, or carry 20 gallons of water in the trunk along with an extra Gerry can or two of gas.  MPG? who cares!! Just gotta know where the gas stations are on the way so you know when and where to fill up again.

I can probably get to Daytona on one tank of gas, but would have to fill up there to make it home.

And if I recall correctly he also performed a rear end swap to highway gears the day before and drove both directions on some really old bias ply tires at highway speeds...   hope to see you there again!  :yesnod:

Depends on the year and what tires I have on.  If I have the bias ply tires on, I most likely would trailer it there.  Radials..... I'm driving !   :coolgleamA:
