Will be in the market for a new truck soon and looking for opinions?   The new Eco looks like it's been getting some good reviews.  Looking for some opinions?

Thanks guys!

I don't own one, but work at a Dodge dealer and have driven one. They are pretty torquey, power feels very similar to a similarly equipped 5.7L HEMI truck. 8 speed automatic shifts very positively.

I've seen some reviews on some sites and they are pretty favorable.   Going to look at them soon! :2thumbs:

Is the extra cost of a diesel + fuel really worth it any more?

Depends on where you live, what you do with it, ect...

I plan on towing a lot in the near future, so looking at 3/4 ton diesels and also the Ram Eco.

if your going to tow alot, i strongly suggest 3/4 truck.

I dont know what your hauling around, but our insurance guy for our company said if for some reason your trailer brakes fail, and you hit someone....They can go after you with a case about the truck not being able to what your towing. If they find your load was pushing your truck to the limit...they will come after you for alot more

3/4 or 1 ton trucks have better brakes, and if your pulling alot you will want that just in case. My dad wanted a new ecoboost ford for his truck, but we tow alot...our insurance guy (who is not our vehicle insurance) said if you pull, get a bigger HD truck....just in case.

Dont know if this will apply to you, but i think its a case of "better safe than sorry"

I agree about the 3/4 ton part, and might go this route.  I'll tow about 7,000.   I currently have a 2010 Ford Crew, and am shocked how this thing takes the abuse.   I've towed a 24' enclosed trailer with my bird in it, for 1,000 miles that it did extremely well.   The big three have really battled back and forth on the towing limits.

I can't speak for the other MFGs but when I got my new 2014 RAM 1500 they gave me a sheet of paper that had the VIN on it and stated the rated towing/hauling capacities. For exactly the litigation reason you mention.

If your going to tow enclosed 7k is going to end up being short, at least from the math I was doing.

Not based on the math I did, Which is why I bought a gas 5.7.

I have a 3.0 diesel and love it empty I can easy get 30mpg on the highway. Worst I got was 15 with 4 snowmobiles on a trailer. Delivered a 57 ply. on a open trailer 20 mpg round trip. Also own a 2011 ram 2500 gas. The diesel worked harder the the 2500 but did a good job. It you only going pull a trailer a little i would go with the 3.0. have 15,000 miles on it with know problems.

The other part of the equation is resale value.   Diesels get more if your going to keep it 4 - 6 years.

I have diesel Sprinter vans for work & when we bought our first one in '04. Back then, the extra cost of the diesel vehicle was about 3 grand and diesel fuel was 25 cents a gallon cheaper than reguklar, but the payoff was in the fuel mileage, which we figured would pay for itself in 2 years.

Today, diesel engine options are up to ten grand more and diesel fuel is 65 cents higher than regular and that make me think that I'll probably get a gas powered Ford Transit van when it's time to replace the next vehicle.

Or you could go with the Ram Promaster. Unlike the Sprinter, it is FWD. Choice of 2 engines, the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with the 62TE automatic, or the Fiat 3.0L I4 Diesel with an automatically shifted manual . The auto. shift manual is a bit unusual to drive, you let off the accelerator a little for it to shift (no clutch pedal). Most of the earliest ones we are doing a few recalls on, but nothing to complicated. We have seen a few with rear brake noises (squealing mostly), but there is no fix, and Fiat's stance is that it is a commercial van, so some brake noise is normal.

You going to replace a Mercedes Sprinter with a Ford Transit? Think twice about that.
