Popping at 2000 rpm

Hello all,
I have a 440 in my 69 Charger I built myself. It's my first real build. I have a pooping coming out the exhaust. I changed out the valve springs on passenger side, then noticed the plug wire was burnt from the headers so I swapped it out with an older one from my 383 and it went away. Last night I changed out the drivers side valves and the popping is back. Any idea what could've causing this? The heads were worked by a performance shop, I never beat on the engine intact I just hit the 500 break in miles. I was setting the timing when we found the popping sound. It was starting at 1500 rpm then I changed the springs now it starts at2000, any ideas on what else could be causing it? Car runs great! I do have a slight bubbling at the #8 header gasket. I know I need to change that out haven't gotten around to it.
I was going to set timing with advanced timing light. Was told to start at 32* @ 2500 RPM when we not ticked it popping.
Thank you,
Scott

What made you change the springs and valves?

Is the sound like a popcorn or a ping?

All could be related to timing, spark, or fuel.  These things easily tested before ripping into a block.

We were setting. The timing when we noticed the popping....lol yes it does sound like pop corn now that I think about it!
My buddy thought it may have been a weak valve spring so that's why I changed them. I called the machine shop and they said they didn't replace them they just measured them and they were within limits. So I changed all the ones on passenger side the popping was still there.
I had seen the plug wire was burnt when I was changing the springs I remem where the old plug wires were so i homed one out it was 2.223 k ohms the burnt one was 12.223 k ohms so I swapped it out, also the boot was torn. Once I changed the plug wire the popping was gone even at 3000rpm. So last night I changed out the drivers side so they would all be equal and steno started it up and let it run till I felt the oil was now circulating when I took the RPM up and the popping was back. Although the engine was not warm.
When I was looking for oil leaks is when I noticed the bubbling out of the header gasket. They are the garbage header gaskets that came with the headers. I have better gaskets I just haven't swapped them out yet.
I was going to do a pressure leak test tonight when I got home but thought I would post it to get some onsite from the Professionals on this site! There are some very intelligent people on here!
Thank you for the fast reply! Any positive advice would be much appreciated! I would love to post a pic of the beast but it keeps telling my the pictures are too large and don't know how to make them smaller!

Popcorn of course relates to possible detonation.  Which of course involves timing, fuel, and spark.
Have you check any of the plugs?

You also have the exhaust leak present.

What kind of distributor are you running?

You are correct these guys on here are phenomenal!  The more info you provide the better we can assist you.

In the end we are all happy if you are burning more rubber, lol

I did check the plugs, like I said the engine only has 500 miles on it including the plugs! I'm wondering since the plug wire was damaged could that have cause premature plug failure? I have all brand new plugs in the engine but I guess I could swap #8 plug out for one in the 383.
The timing is set at 39* BTDC @ 2500 but I was told by my UTI instructor to restard it back to 32*! I did check the fuel air mixture on the 750 com Holley, it was rebuilt about 6 months ago.
Yes the header is bubbling at the #8 position also. I'll change the plug out and start there.
I'm running 3:23 gears so there is no tire burning here lol I'm considering going to 3:55's as I know 3:23 is a very high gear it's like breaking lug nuts loose with a 1/4" ratchet!
The 440 is bore out .040" over with aluminum flat top Pistons, I think it's either a stock or mild cam (wasn't aure how to measure it before I put it in) hih rise Edlebrock performance dual plain intake manifold and some hookers!
Being a retired disabled vet my income is not what it used to be so ibuilt the engine on a tight budget.

First, thank you for your devoted service!!

Based on 39 timing may be your problem.  32-36 is ideal.  I would change that plug as well.

Not much of a difference between 3.23/3.55.  3.23 are a very good overall gear.

The thing is though my engine was doing this popcorn sounding popping before I advanced the timing. What is baffling me is the fact that yesterday morning when I changed out the plug wire it ran fine up to 3000 RPM without a single noise and then last night after I changed the driver side Springs I have changed nothing other than the springs and the popping came back. However I did not allow the engine to warm up like I did yesterday morning so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it also.
And thank you I appreciate the support all people give to service numbers as it is a demanding occupation.

Get it to operating temp and see what happens

motoreese

Ok so I changed out the plug, let it warm up to operating temp and revved it up to 2500 and no pooping. Would have gone up to 3k but room mate is still sleeping. He's night shift!

Thanks again for the advise! I'm so happy right now!
Enjoy your Christmas holiday season!
