Who in their right mind would pay ANYTHING for this burnt hull???:
Isn't EVERYTHING warped???  Completeley wasted???

What in the world could you do w/ it????????  GL jump car???????  that's about it no???

bull

So it's not yours I take it? ;D I tell you what, nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to Chargers and what people will do to get their hands on one. Do you remember seeing that '68 (I think) Hemi Charger that sold on Ebay about a year ago. It was a complete mess, completely gutted, no engine or trans, tubbed rear, all the parts were missing including the dash with the VIN, and it sold for some ungodly amount of money. IIRC it was in the $60k - $70k range, just because it was a Hemi car.

Actually several reasons I can think of and there are many more probably.

1 - it was the car the guy had inschool and had great itmes in it. Now he wants to "get her back."

2- to test the limits of the person's abilities. The older I get the more I enjoy restoring the cars rather than driving them (Oh God did I say that? - I don't like trying to drive them and everyone and their dog is crawling all over them and the other drivers on the road do not instill much confidence in me.) Much like a 1:1 scale model where you do all the work and at the end of the project you have something to show for it. In this case it would be better to start with a more complete car, but then, that car is a true test of someone's abilities, pocketbook and determination.

3 - maybe he has a complete car that is severely rotted - to the point that it needs a rebody. A good media blasting to see what you got and go from there.

and one more old lady will be resurrrected.

Shakey

I am sure someones plans include the term "re-body".

Reminds me of the time a guy tried to sell me on a 1990s T-bird that he said he'd let go for cheap. The story was: "All it needs is a crankshaft."

if that was numbers matching  69 HEMI  CHARGER 500 /DAYTONA and after a real close look at the the body  yes i would .  a good media blast/ chemical strip ,drill out all the spots welds and  remove the warped metal, buy a couple of donnor cars carefully unpick the metal you need , then rebuild the body shell using as much of the burnt  69  500 /Daytona as possible , the car would be keeper for all time , thats the only way i could afford one.  but all that work for a XP 383 car

There is the distinct chance that the guyt is going to make a rebody to pass it off as original - but there's no accounting for integrity. And maybe it is the guy's highschool car, or a hemicar or particular bizarre color combo (butterscotch and vitamin C as one 1971 hemi road runner wears. Its really hard to determine the person's motives from one picture. ;D But at least isn't not turned into Aylmer soup cans.

What amazes me is the so called project cars that you can clearly see were pulled out of salvage yards. Most of the parts are pulled /cut off them and they still go for big bucks.

Yup - the hobby is indeed insane. ;D

I wouldn't touch that car with a 20 foot pole. A car that is burnt that badly was exposed to intense heat from the fire. That heat actually can change the molecular structure of the metal, and turn it very brittle.
Sure, you can change exterior warped body panels, & you'll be left with a car that LOOKS good on the OUTSIDE. On the INSIDE, it's a death trap. Now you've got interior structural parts that are brittle. What do you think would happen if that car ever got hit? Or even stresses from the road?
I wouldn't put my family in that thing.

Well, it would be ok if you were going to make it a museum only car.

I know what you're getting at, and I agree about the burned car on this thread.  That unibody shell will never be safe again no matter how good a resto shop can make it LOOK.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But on the other hand, just for the sake of discussion . . .

What about the mentality that say's it's more "prefessional" to cut & replace the entire underchassis of a rusty Hemi car using a bunch of Chinese sheetmetal?  That kid of insane resto work makes you a hero in this hobby, but how could that possibly be as "safe" and "solid" as just re-bodying it with a clean 318 car's body (which will get you accused of fraud)?

I'm not saying that a heavy-rust restoration is as bad as the burned car in the pic, or anything.  But the principle of the hobby's repairing logic isn't all that far off.

:iagree: yeh,! you are right bill , had a good look at the pictures again :scope:  most  if not of the inner structure is

warped /distorted . defiantly one for the big junk yard in the sky .

terrible one

I saw this car the other day. At first I thought there is no way anyone would bid on it, it's completly totaled and has obviously seen an EXTREME amount of heat. Then I remembered...it's Ebay!

Poor Charger...

Not sure if its a good thing but the more I look at these pieces of flaming dog excrement that are bringing stupid money on eGouge, the better I feel about my '68 with its massive amount of cancer and blatant lack of sheetmetal. :-\

And I fully agree that this particular shell should be allowed to go to the big junkyard in the sky. If it was only a small engine fire or just one side of the car that was exposed to a lower amount of heat I would say there might be a chance at saving it but this thing has seen some EXTREME heat and I feel bad for whoever buys it...

Was that a 69?

By the fenders yes. Unless they were put on another 2nd Gen.

Yes, I understand your concerns with this aspect, too. But, that is a topic for a different thread. Panel replacement from rust damage is a completely different animal than resurrecting this burnt hulk of a car. Your welding/bonding replacement sheetmetal on an inner structure that is still good with rust repair. If done properly, the car will be as strong as before. Manufacturers do crash tests on repaired cars nowadays to test sectioned frame rails, replaced inner fender aprons, etc, to develop proper repair techniques.
Trying to fix that thing is like nailing a 2x4 to balsa wood. The metal of that car is structurally & molecularly damaged. I'm a big advocator for "saving the Chargers," but unfortunately that one is Gonzo.

Sometimes its better to let them go and be gone.....thats like bringing back the dead in Pet cemetery!  :o
That metal has been definitely exposed to such heat as to change its molecular structure. It should be put to rest.  :rotz:
