Hey gang,,
I have a question. I know in '68, the '5' code for the tranny is an automatic.. Now, I have a '5' on my
68 Hemi Charger R/T, obviously a 727 HD. But, how do you tell whether a small block came with a 904 or a 727?

Like, a '68 340, it'll have a 727, and a '5' I bet. But, a 318 car/auto will have a '5' as well, but more than likely, a 904 tranny..... Is it just an assumption of application?

Troy, I don't know for certain, but I think most of the automatics were coded as "5", and the engine selection determined whether it was a 727 or 904.  I know that changed for 1969, but what little I've found on this particular subject all seems to indicate "5" = 3-speed automatic for almost every application.

The only way to tell is to check the build sheet.  727's were an option for 318 cars.

Forgot about the 727A - I've been playing with RB stuff too long...  Yep, it's build-sheet territory only.
