Headlights don't work without brights

Hey guys, hopefully this is a simple question for the electrical guys (I am obviously not one of them).

I have never had a problem with my headlights but saturday evening I went to head home from a local cruise night and my lights would not turn on.  Doors opened up just fine, just no lights.  So I clicked on my brights and then all 4 lamps work, the 2 standard headlights and the 2 brights.  Click the brights back off and no lights at all.

Anyone seen this or have any suggestions?  All help appreciated.  Hopefully an easy fix....

The outboard lamps are both low beam and high beam, the inboard lamps are high beam only so it sounds like high beams work but low beams are out.  The bulbs could be bad but more likely you have a loose wire or something wrong with the dimmer switch.  Check your fuses and wiring for any damage, then check voltage at the switch to see if you have 12v going to the front.

I'm gonna say it's the dimmer switch.  Had that problem with mine once.

Check out all of those above.  I had the same issue and it ended up to be the dimmer switch.

After throwing a meter on all the wires and finding that they were good I figured I had better start at the beginning.  So I grabbed a couple of my old bulbs and swapped them out. Lights work just fine.  I had swapped the old working ones for new ones a number of weeks ago because I wanted to see if the new ones would be brighter.  They were pretty close to the same so I left the new ones in.  Worked fine for a few weeks then this problem. I am at a loss for why the new bulbs may have been a problem, same bulbs, part number, etc.  But old bulbs work fine, new bulbs don't.  I can't see why but I have lights again.
