Ignition Lock Cylinder Question

Hey guys, please let me know if this is not in the right place.

The ignition lock cylinder in my '73 is not activating the ignition switch in the 'start' position, and does not spring back to the 'on' position as I assume it should. It does, however, activate the electronics in the 'on' position. Now I know that the ignition switch works because I can remove the cylinder (my next question) and physically activate the switch and start the car with my finger. The ignition lock cylinder, when in the 'off' position, slides freely in and out of the ignition housing (after pressing the pin in on the cylinder, of course. Don't ask, I bought it this way).

Could my issue be with a broken lock cylinder? Broken starter switch? Should my lock cylinder not be coming in and out of the housing freely? Is there a trick to popping this thing in?

Thanks in advance for any help.

No, it should not come out at all with out tearing into the steering column.

Brand new, $15 ... can't go wrong. And then have your doors keyed to the new key, locksmith did mine that way ... easy!  :2thumbs:

Okay cool. Thanks man! Also, any idea what special tools I may need besides a wheel puller? (Will any old puller do, or is a mopar tool needed?)

ODZKing

Nope, just have to pull the sections of the wheel until you get to the switch. Sounds scary at first but I've done it so many times now I could do it in my sleep.
Regular wheel or Tuff wheel, that is an extra step.
Pull the wheel and just start loosening the screws. You will have to pull the turn signal stalk as well.
Someone else may chime in here but I don't believe you need anything other than a puller and regular tools. Nothing special.
