I am getting water in my over flow tank, why and what do I have to check

Baldwinvette77

... Thermostat?.. check for leaks? Not alot of info given buddy, But welcome to the site anyway

If its getting in the overflow, it could be as simple as the car trying to find its own level, they do that.  It could be a bad rad cap too, does the temp run hot on the guage?

Quite likely it's normal, nothing to worry about.

What conditions led to this: hot driving, hot weather?  More info needed.

And, welcome too.

It over heated once so I changed the water pump and thermostat. I bleed the the water lines. My temp goes to half on my temp gauge. The only thing I see that's odd is one of the fans on my car does not work. There is two of them. The bottom one works but the top one it seems is not turning. Does the bottom one cool the ac? What does the top one cool, the radiator? I'm a parts changer, I can replace any part on a car if I can see where it goes. I'm just not good at figuring out what's wrong. Was there a recall on that fan? If not about how much to replace, do you think I need to change my radiator?

That's a closed system, its normal for coolant to flow into there when you shut the car off and it will siphon back into the engine as required.  If the guage is reading normal and you aren't getting an excessive amount in the overflow I wouldn't worry about it.  There should be hot and cold levels marked on the side of the overflow, no?

Christopher

Yes there are marks. When I turn the car off last night the over flow was full and steam was coming out. It did eventually siphon out into the radiator. I went to check afterward and had to put more coolant into it. If I'm losing coolant does it mean I blew a head gasket? I'm going to check now.

Full and steaming aren't normal.  When it siphons back and cools off is it below the cold level mark?  A few good techs on here so hopefully one will chime in.  Cooter is up on the newer stuff and a helpful guy.

Christopher

Yes it went below the cold level. I filled it last night over the full line, I just checked it and the level is between the full and minimum line. Now that could be just steam evaporating but I am a little worried.

Christopher

It seems it's not circulating

The cooling fans are set to cut in at different temperatures. You can check if the second one is working by attaching a piece of painters tape to the fan blade and the shroud, if the tape breaks after a drive you know it works.  :Twocents:
