Locating engine numbers

I have tried to locate the id numbers on my engine, still without success after asking on forums and searching web for advice..

I understand that they should be stamped near and below distributor, in some cases also bottom right side etc, but after searching with flashlight and videoing with my phone I still have not found anything that corresponds to guides on the web.

The engine should be a 383, but as I cannot confirm I thought I'd post photos if someone could pinpoint exactly where to look for the numbers? Also if someone could tell from the photos if it indeed looks like a 383 that would also be appreciated, and any other relevant information, as I am not an expert :).. The car is a '73, the engine would be older.

Should I be looking on top of the engine, front between the generator and AC or where? There's so much luxury on it, as in AC and power pumps, that I can not fit my head in there :) Also it unfortunately is not yet the tidiest engine there could be..

If it is a 383 (B block) the numbers will be on the passenger side. Look in front of the right cylinder head (below all those hoses) where the machined block extends forward from the head, the numbers will be stamped there.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Also casting numbers and date on lower sides of block , John helped me make sense of when i couldn't find my engine number ,
Early blocks don't have the pad for number to be stamped on near sump,
Have a look for your casting numbers , date on sides of block below heads
Unfortunately you will have to look from under car to the sides of block, these will help identify what the engine is
That pad near front near the distributor won't tell you much
Take some photos if can so guys on here can help identify

See this thread:

You'll see casting #s like this as well as a pad most of the time near the oil pan, usually pass side.
68 block I have is stamped on pad under the dizzy.

I disagree, the data stamped there is the final assembly info which includes the year, displacement, build date and any oversized/undersized dimensional data.

Casting dates that are near the end of a year's production could wind up in the next model year cars.

Great, thanks for info! I did find the casting numbers, passenger side behind the middle headers! 2468130-3 so it is a 383, but I could not yet get the casting date. I will have to try to get that and the numbers from the top pad, if it is like 440 in the thread it is probably blocked by AC compressor, or behind the distributor if like your '68..

I show 1959 to 1971.  The -3 means third casting of the block mold.
My guess is mid 60's. If it is past 68 you may find a vin, otherwise just a date code.
