What engines were in 68 Charger R/T's

Did the  Charger R/T's also come with 383's or only 440's?

A383Wing

only 440 or Hemi....no other engine offered in the R/T group

Troy

:iagree: There is generally some confusion from people mixing up facts...

  • An R/T was generally an upscale, top of the line performance car.
  • The R/T version of most Dodge vehicles from 66-69 only came with a 440 or Hemi.
  • Superbees and Roadrunners had a base 383 4bbl with Hemi as the only option. In 1969 the 440 Six Pack was available in these cars only.
  • The base engine for the Challenger R/T (starting in 1970) was a 383 4bbl Magnum (440 4bbl, 440 Six Pack, and Hemi as options). Further confusion because you could get a 383 2bbl OR 4bbl on a non-R/T.
So, some people see other Dodge performance cars with a 383 OR hear a similar sounding name in conversation and assume they all came that way.

Things were reasonably simple in 1968 compared to later years. Slant Six for some unknown reason (they only made a handful), small block (318) and big block (383 2bbl) V8s for the masses, a slightly hotter 383 4bbl for some performance, and then the 440 and Hemi R/Ts for the racer and big spenders (some people just liked to have a huge engine in their big, expensive car).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The reason I asked, is that a friend of mine was at a local car meet and saw a 1968 charger.
He called me and said that it had the R/T designation but had a 383 engine under the hood.
That didn't sound right to me so I asked the question here.
Thank you for the answers and explanation.

Was it an R/T VIN or did it just have R/T badges? It's easy - and common - to add a stripe and emblems. A real R/T will have a VIN number starting with "XS29" and the 5th digit will either be "L" for a 440 or "J" for a Hemi. If it's a factory 383 car with replaced emblems the VIN would start with "XP29" and the 5th digit will either be "G" for a 2bbl or "H" for a 4bbl. Looking closer, there's a whole mess of other changes underneath between and R/T and standard models (bigger brakes, torsion bars, rear springs, exhaust, etc.).

This is my first post here, but i have been a long time looker and longer time Charger owner.  68 Chargers R/T did come with a 383, I have one and the VIN does say its an R/T with a 383. I didn't believe it at first, but its true. Just my 2 cents.

Gotta love a '69

Troy is bang on with his post outlining what was available. I believe you are mistaken. XS29 cars in 68 were either 440 or Hemi. No other choice

Absolutely, unequivocably and without a doubt there were NO 68 Charger RT's that came from the factory with 383's.  You can calim you owned a couple but I guarantee you can't prove it.
