Need help, please!

I just found this Charger, '69 SE, but the old man who has it claims he doesn't know who the owner is, it is just sitting in his lot.  How or would I even be able to find out who the last registered owner is?  Would I go through DMV or what else could I do?  Here is the VIN: XP29G9B212***.  <---This is in case someone lives in my hometown and tries to get it before I do  .

I think this process varies substantially by state. Seems like the DMV would be a good start. Probably a "lost title" process.

Thanks for answering.  I guess I'll go through that route and see where it takes me.  The car is just sitting in his lot with a couple of flats, but in very good condition.  Very little surface rust, but there is one large dent right before the rear wheel well.  And one smaller dent near the left front bumper.
