I've got a 1965 383.

I'd like to use it in a 1968 car.

What are the visual and mechanical differences between the different years of 383's ?

depends...are these both 2bbl or 4bbl engines?

the 65 will have closed chamber and small valve heads. The 68 will have open chamber & large valve heads.
Cam profile will be a bit different. The stock 68 intake is way better than the 65 intake.

Plus a few other minor changes that ain't all that big of deal

Depending on which body type you intend to perform the swap in, the oil pan might not work. In the '65 B-body the engine sits further forward and the pan might not clear the '68 drag link.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

It's in my '65 Fury that's probably getting parted out:

I'd put it in my '68 Charger if it would look, fit and function properly.

Any concerns with engine mounts (it's got those "A" body looking bosses on the block). :scratchchin:

Torque converter fitment ?  :shruggy:

A lot depends on what engine/trans was previously in the '68 Charger.

'65 C-body 383 will work in a '68 B-body with the possible exception of the pan as previously mentioned. If the '68 currently has a BB 727 it and the converter will mate to the '65 with no problems and you'll have to use '68 BB engine mounts.

4 or 6 bolts valve covers ? ( hence heads ) Can't recall when was the change
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

Max wedge heads? Hell yes, now we are talking...lol. max wedge heads went from 4 to 6 bolt in 64'

The 65 383 should have 516 heads on it with a higher (possibly positive) deck height while yhe 68 383 should have 906's and a low sitting piston.... this is all assuming the engines have never been touched.......

A383Wing

I heard the 68 engine was positive deck height...at least mine is that I got in the car

won't make any difference, since he has a complete running engine anyway, aside from the pan fitment, it all should bolt in I would think

Thanks, Guys !

If I end up parting this thing out... :eek2:

I'll keep the engine. :coolgleamA:

You've got that backwards, '68-'69 (open chambers) 383's had positive deck height...if a closed chamber '65 had positive deck the pistons would smack the head at TDC.
