Today i left my car at the local garage, i explained the issues that it is very rich, stinks and got much black smoke from the exhaust when its cold. When warm its much better, but uses a lot of gas.. Probably 12mpg!
Easy to start and runs smooth at idle.

The engine is original a 383 2bbl, fitted with carter avs 4bbl, dated 1969. Double 2,1/4" exhaust.
Drives great and pretty strong, smoke the tires easily on throttle, (cooper cobra 275/60-15)
Cam is unknown

After a conversation with the mechanic he think a carb swap would be the best, he havent tested or checked the engine yet. Gonna do it tomorrow.. I like the originality the car got and it runs great, but uses a lot of gas.. The gas is expensive here too, ca 2 dollars/litre!!

What do you think? Is it time to swap the nearly 50 year old carb?

Sorry for my inglish ;)

The internal's of new carbs are obviously far advanced in functionality and ability to tune.  Your options are to have your carb rebuilt if you really want to keep it and save money, or buy a new carb.  A 750 cfm would be my recommendation but I'm sure others will chime in.

I thought you said " I like the originality the car got and it runs great, but uses a lot of gas."  I don't really understand what you want here. It came with a 2bbl, but now has a 4bbl.
Find a different 4bbl carb.  12 mpg is not bad for a heavy big block charger.  Good luck and it's a very nice car.

The mechanic was talking about a modern new carb and alu manifold. But i think i stick with the AVS and rebuild it.

It would be fun too go for a holley 750cfm, performer intake, higher cam lift, headers and a Detroit truetrac, but
I dont think the 383 gives me the value for money.  :Twocents:

12 mpg is about right for these cars.  You will never get "good" gas mileage with these cars, that's just something you have to live with.  If you need a car with good gas mileage buy a Honda Civic...

hemi-hampton

If you want good gas Mileage go back to the 2bbl. Otherwise my advise would be a new Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm 4bbl carb. The Edelbrock Performer carb is very similiar to the older Carter AVS in my opinion. But, to run right, carb size should depend on Cam size lift & duration & overlap which you don't know? LEON.

P.S. Trans Stall speed & rear end ratio & manifold plenum should be considered when picking cam & carb.

Tmb84

I have been reading in this forum that someone is getting 16-18mpg with a 440!

Perhaps i can manage 14-15mpg on highway during 50-55mph and a very light foot..

Thanks for inputs, looking forward to hear from the mechanic today  :yesnod:

Mileage depends on tires size, carb and rear end gears.

Tmb84

The choke was to rich and he set the timing little higher. It sounds better now. Havent test drived it yet.
He recomends a new edelbrock or rebuild the AVS. Some of the carb problem is the vacum clock, should replace it now.

The rear end is 3:23.
The worst is all the black smoke and the smell it make when cold.

Thanks for inputs  :2thumbs:

I have gotten around 16 with one of mine - but it has a Six Pack and I can keep the outboards from opening (basically driving on the center carb) if I keep the speed reasonable. With a 4bbl carb about the best I have ever managed was about 14. Really, about the time I squeeze some decent mileage out, I'll romp on it to pass a car on the highway or between lights. Oh well! Remember, every cent you spend trying to make the mileage better could have been spent on gas. ;) For example, if you get 12 mpg then spend $1,000 on a new carb/installation to get 15 mpg you'll have to drive 7925.165 miles to make up the difference. If you drive like I do that's maybe a summer. If you drive like most others around here that's a decade or two. :P

Here's the math:
price per liter * liter per gallon = price per gallon
$2 * 3.78541 = $7.57082

price per gallon / miles per gallon = cost per mile
$7.57082 / 12 = $0.630901666 (old)
$7.57082 / 15 = $0.504721333 (new)

old cost per mile - new cost per mile = difference in cost per mile
$0.630901666 - $0.504721333 = $0.1261803333333334

Dollars spent to increase mileage / difference in cost per mile = Total miles for old and new to balance
$1,000 / $0.1261803333333334 = 7925.1653

Oddly enough, that math works out to almost exactly $5,000 total spent.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Sound advise.  Again 12 MPG is not bad.  These are not meant to be everyday toys.

now there is two things i want to share with you..

first, last weekend i raced my "racecar" the challenger 496. it was a 1/8 dragrace with the dial at 7.70. it was also my ever first dragrace :2thumbs:
The times was: 7.99/7.86/7.97/7.64 -breakout. best 60ft was 1.84. i just put it in Drive and flored it. real fun. tire size is 27x10,5

second: the man i buyed my Charger from do now have a another charger, a 70 R/T 440 auto, top banana with black vinylroof, only watched it on pictures. charcoal interior, console, not sure if its a number matching car.
looks realy good. it fitted with a pretty rare option, G36 rally side mirrors. the seller can take my charger in trade

what you think? thanks

A trade would depend on the other cars condition in my opinion. I doubt it's original like yours. LEON.

Daytona R/T SE

Keep the one you have. :Twocents:

I sold a Charger many years ago because I wanted to buy a Challenger.

The Challenger sucked.

The kid that bought my Charger fucked it all up, so there was no going back.

Looks nice but might be a Bondo buggy. A Earl Scheibed HPLAG car possibly?  :scratchchin: :shruggy:

Tmb84

The seller got a good reputation so i dont think the car is crap. This car was shipped to Norway in 2011. He is the second or third owner here. Planning to go see it on friday, 2,5hour drive one way.

Why does he want to trade a similar looking R/T for a non R/T?  LEON.

BIGBLCK11

I bet your car is cleaner and more original.  Hard to tell from the one pic, better look close at the rear valance corner.  It looks like it has a funky angle.  Unless he LOVES the white combo better?  As Leon said, who would trade an R/T 440 for non-R/T 383??   :shruggy:

JR

Speaking as someone who owns a twin to that RT, I vote keep the one you have.

That said, post up more pics of the other car when you can.

Well he do not WANT the trade, i want to trade if the r/t is in good shape. I also might have to pay something in between.. I do not have the money to just buy the car.

I'd keep the one you got. I rather have a more original car then a restored car. Just my opinon. LEON. :Twocents:
