Ferdinand Piech recently met with the Agnelli and Elkann families (major FCA share owners) and discussed a takeover of FCA by VW..

Hmm, don't know what to think about that.

I do.  I know it has nothing to do with the old stuff but I still prefer being associated with a company that exists than sitting with the Packard and Studebaker kids over on the far side.

I can see where VW would want to do a deal like this.  Their sales have spiraled downhill over the last few years here in the U.S.    But, I don't see it happening.  Fiat seems to be having fun with their new acquisition, so far, in a good way.

If a US company is going to be owned and operated by a non-US entity, VAG/Volkswagen Auto Group is the cream of the crop in that arena.

VAG currently operates Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ducati, MAN, Scania, Porsche, and for some reason, Suzuki. After acquisition, each of those companies had a marked improvement in build quality, reliability, and sales. VAG interiors are well known for having a quality feel to them. I've owned and worked on numerous VW's and Audis over the years, and they haven't lost their wrench-friendly build methods over multiple generations. Not to mention their tight relationship with Bosch, who provides some of the best automotive electrics in the history of the automobile.

While I would really like to see a US car company owned and operated by US held interests, being bought by VAG is a far better option than some of the companies in western Europe, India, or worse, China that are out to form transportation powerhouse conglomerates.

VAG has a recipe that works. They share technology, production methods, and innovation across all their marques while maintaining brand recognition and identity. And their production model is a very fine balance of quality and profit margin.

Nearly a quarter of the 30 or so cars I've owned in my life have been VAG makes, from 60's air cooled VW's to 2000+ Audis. Not because I'm a fan of huge corporations (I despise them to be honest), but because they're built solid, drive well, and are a pleasure to work on since I prefer to do my own work whenever possible.

I would rather see quality and sales go up than to see the brand die off. We've already lost the "keep it in the US" battle. At the end of the day, far worse things could happen to Chrysler than being acquired by VW.

Damn man, Chrysler is being tossed around like 5$ whore  :o

Remember what happened when the last German auto maker owned Chrysler!

The only reason I see for VW to make this purchase would be to grow revenue and possibly overtake the other axis power as the largest......

Imo, it was a euro pump-and-dump.

We got a RWD HEMI car.....
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Wrapped in Euro-sedan four door clothing for which they told us we were the idiots because we couldn't all get on our knees and praise the decision to call it a Charger.  It isn't so much a Hemi either as it is a semi Hemi with some smart marketing.  A pent roof chamber with squish but it is a great engine without doubt.  And the rear drive part can't be disputed.

I have nothing good to say about this rumour. I hate VW's even worse than Bend's. I also would expect their corporate culture to be similar. The best days of Chrysler were just before they got it up the stump from the Bends boys.

Ok, Which on of you are going to be the first one to do a rear engine swap on your General Lee?
