Ok guys, long time mopar fan, but I just recently found a 69 charger. My dream car for years and years!

well I bought it yesterday, honestly a dream come true. I will post more info later about me and how I came about the car!

but for right now im wondering if you guys can help me out

I decoded the vin and sent it to dodge for a build sheet

My car came back as a xp29h49b

according to the vin, my car was a 383 335hp car (now has a 440)

what im wondering from you guys is the following

1. how many quarts of oil will a 1970 440 take with filter? (and what brand, weight oil for spring- fall cruises)
2. motor is bone stock other than the carb (4 bbl) what spark plugs would be good in this motor?
3. It has the 727, want to throw a trans cooler on it and a shift kit (any suggestions?)

Once I get the build sheet from dodge, I hope to know more about the car, but until then this basic stuff should help me out!

will post more info and pics later this week or early next week with a story on the car!

thanks guys in advance, and any tips/tricks or helpful info would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats and welcome

If the pan is stock you will need 5 quarts of oil with a filter change. You will get a hundred different answers on what's the best oil but the one thing to make sure you get is a ZDDP additive or an oil with it already mixed in. I have always used Valvoline VR1 and Royal Purple HPS in a 10W-30 or 10W-40, both have the additive mixed in.

A good spark plug is the NGK XR5

As for a trans cooler, I just installed one of these. Install was smooth and has been working great.

yes the motor is bone stock other than the carb

I will do a oil/filter change with 5 quarts, but honestly im a jeep/dodge truck guy

I run rotella t5 in everything

its a synthetic blend, 10w-30

whats a good oil with zddp? where do I find it? walmart?

napa has the zinc additive if you choose to do it that way. napa also sells valvoline and should have the previously mentioned VR1 by white and red. not sure if walmart has a zinc additive or not.

ok so if I go to napa, which I will to get the filter

do I get 4 quarts of 10w30 high mileage then 1 quart of zinc additive? whats the right mix ratio?

so if this is a dumb question....im use to the jeep 4.0 straight 6.....you can pour in vegetable oil and the motor will run for ever

I don't want to hurt this older motor....just want good oil that will do what it takes

would rotella t3 work? its a conventional oil? is that a good oil for the ole 440?

nvrbdn

i believe the additive is a small bottle added to the 5 qts of oil.  or just get the 5 qts of valvoline VR1 if it already has the additive in it.

ok, ill look when I go there...thanks guys

any opinion on what straight 10w30?

should I go with normal or high mileage? or don't it matter as long as I have the additive in?

Good luck getting any "build sheet" from anyone. If you cannot find it in the car, (Often found woven into rear seat springs) chances are you will never find it anywhere. Chrysler Corp never kept these on file to release to the public. There are unusual & isolated cases where these sheets are found in a car different than what is supposed to be there; The Daytona Chargers are one example. The reason in that case was that they did several conversions at one time. The cars interiors were gutted and parts put into piles. During reassembly, the workers simply grabbed matching color seats and installed them.

First, welcome to the site! Owning a Charger is special!   :2thumbs:

Your vin for the '69 should be "XP29H9BXXXXXX". Where did the "4" come from?     :scratchchin:

And the 383 4-bbls for the Chargers were rated at 330 HP. Other 383's for other models came with a few more goodies to get that 335 HP rating.

And post pics when you can.
