Got busted speeding in the dart

No excuse, I was speeding.

Stuck behind 8 semi trucks with trailers doing 60km/h on the highway (speed limit is 100km/h). 30 minutes following these trucks I get two a two lane up a hill that allowed me to pass. Punched it and just as I passed the lead truck I notice an RCMP Police Cruiser in a pullout with the Officer standing there with a radar gun. The officer dove into his car and since I knew I was caught, I immediately started slowing down and pulled over so he wouldn't have had to chase me.

That immediately put him a little at ease. He "thanked" me for not making him chase me down with lights and sirens. He gave the normal speech about how he could impound my car, arrest me, fine me massive amounts, and could even lose my license for 5 years. I told him there was no excuse for the speed but I did explain the trucks.

He then proceeded to ask a LOT of questions about my car, asked to see under the hood, etc. Told me about his '69 Dart with a 383, blah blah blah. Then it came down to the ticket. He was true on everything he said he could do under the "stunting" law in Canada (burning tires, excessive speeding, racing, doughnuts, revving your engine, etc). Instead he wrote out an excessive speeding ticket for $310 and told me next time I wouldn't be so lucky.

He clocked me at 232km/h (144mph) so he said. That is over double the posted limit.  :rotz:

You got lucky, in southern Ontario they can't wait for an opportunity to use that stunt driving bit.

In BC I've heard of it used A LOT! I was sweating bullets, I was REALLY lucky.

If the cop owned a 383 dart himself, & caught you in a dart..then why did you get a ticket?
I thought darts were rare up north.

Shit... that's outrageous even if you were speeding, I got caught one night (midnight, young dumb and full of cum) about 10 years ago doing 130mph in a 97 Cobra, The Deputy asked me how fast I was going I did not bother lying to him I told him it was a dumb move and I was doing about 110mph... I thought I was going to jail he had me go sit in his car and called in my drivers license as we were sitting there he kept asking what had been done to the car so I let the laundry list fly and he said all he saw was a black blur... he told me "If I ever see that black Mustang again doing anything over the speed limit in this county your gonna get a hell of a ticket" I said "yes sir" and with that he handed me a WARNING!!! I about shit myself on the spot... needless to say I sold the car about a month later!!
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Anyone driving that fast on a public road should have their driver's license permanently revoked, in addition to a hefty fine and at least 30 days in jail.

I'm calling Bullshit on the 144 MPH...KPH maybe~! No freaking way driving an old fashioned car like that!  Let's be honest here...these old cars don't drive, handle, perform, nor have the same manners and characteristics as driving a modern car.  No offense but especially an A-body!  Hey, I like A-bodies and I've owned two Dusters but they had the worst suspension, steering, and braking of any Mopar I've owned.  Not to mention the gearing to get a going car that fast.

Your car would never reach that speed Drache, even with the 440 and the blower sticking out of the hood...  :eyes:   You're also a dumbass for driving like that, as someone else said you deserved more than just a ticket.  There's just no good reason for doing stupid shit like that. You could have easily lost control of that high powered go-kart and killed yourself, or someone else.  Lucky isn't the word.... somebody was watching out for your ass.

At those speeds people have lost control of Vipers and Corvettes with driver-aided technologies and 100 times more stability, control, and capability as your Dart....think about that the next time you get behind the wheel to demonstrate your coolness. :Twocents: :Twocents:

My speedometer tops out at 120mph and the needle was buried past that. Thus I can state I knew I was at least going that. The officer simply told me it was 144mph.

As for speeding, yes what I did was wrong and was expecting the worst and deserved it too. I let my temper get the better of me and dictated my driving.

It had nothing to do with "coolness". I lost my temper following those trucks and pinned it to pass them.

You're probably right, he was only doing 14 mph. The front end was shaking so badly that the vibrations ran up the steering column to his arms to his shoulders & shook his head blurring his eyes so it "looked" like 144.

You should get your speedometer pinion gear checked.

Do it on a race track. Other people on the road aren't a "pussy" for not trusting your driving skills (regardless of how legendary you may think they are) or your car at such speeds. Speeders fall into the same category as drunk or texting drivers (I'm talking about ridiculous speeds by the way, not just 10 or 15 MPH over the limit).

Yes what I did was VERY wrong and I was fully willing to take my punishment for what I did.

It was when I took the car in to be inspected. The speedometer is correct.

My '67 Dart I used to have topped out at 110mph at the track and that was only a 318.

at least its now had a proper shakedown run  and you know it'll stay together    :yesnod:

we have the same sort of laws over here they can and they DO impound your car for a frekin burnout  (called excessive loss of traction )  :rotz:

I don't know.. 144 in an A body... :scratchchin:
I guess I did loose a state boy once in a fox body mustang doing 140.
Still makes my hair stand on end thinking about it.

Were the 8 trucks lined up in a convoy, or could you have maybe squeezed in between a couple of them safely? :popcrn:  Most places I know of, it's illegal for trucks to run in convoy.

I probably would have done the same thing if I could have done it safely.

DAY CLONA

Last time I got stopped speeding was on one of the HotRod Power Tours...around 140 MPH+ I was just making up for lost time on the event to catch up with the group after a delayed fuel stop (behind a convoy of trucks fueling up as well)...just that my stop fared better than yours, a couple of staged "stop/bagged" photos with the State Police evidence camera, his Cell Phone, and then a requested smokey burnout after leaving the "scene"( I can just imagine the reaction of passing motorists , seeing me smoke the hides big time, and a Statey recording it with his Phone standing behind my car on the side of the highway!)....and he actually told me at what exits the next State Police cars would be at, so that I could get back on the road and "go for it"

They still use Polaroid instant film cameras for "evidence" taking :icon_smile_big:

They were nose to ass with not a space between them. It's "illegal" here to but very rarely enforced. It was safe for me to pass as I had a designated passing lane, I just went way too fast passing them which was unsafe and stupid.

For all the fretting about how strict the Canadian cops are about speeding, if you do 144 on the highway here you automatically lose you license, can spend up to 1 year in jail, and the fine can be $5,000. If are UI or racing another, it's worse.

Now this is a B-body forum, but I hate to see our little brother A-bodies disparaged!  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Just for giggles I pulled a sample of some of my old open road event results: 2006 Bonneville 100, Robbi and Jerry White of Elko NV running a 69 Dart, 418 stroker small block, stock type (improved spring and roll rates) Mopar torsion bar suspension, stock steering, stock 833 4-speed, a 40 year old set of stock 2.76 gears in an 8-3/4, no overdrive, and no body improvements save for a front air dam and a 2-inch tall deck spolier ran a top trap speed on radar of 166.85 mph AND averaged 130mph over the distance of the 100 mile course. Yup   :yesnod:  a soundly built, relatively mild, small block, carb'ed, naturally aspirated A-body with a 1:1 drive ratio is on certified radar at 166.85 mph. In addition to that, 168mph was the top tech speed he was allowed to run without earning a DQ, so there was probably a little more!

Whether our Canadian pal actually ran 144 is another thing, but just because your A-bodies were worn out turds doesnt mean they are incapable of performance.

Say three Hail Iacacca's and do a burn out and all will be forgiven.

This should be easy, just post a picture of the ticket, right?  :shruggy:

The ticket didn't list my speed, just states "Excessive Speed"

But I'll go dig through my car and try to find the carbon copy.

Yep yer lucky. But most cops are usually pretty good if you don't give em any grief. The fact that you pulled over and were waiting probly helped too. And he was a Dart guy. Just be more careful, I guess and chock it up as a learning experience. All you can really do.

Last year when I had my charger for only a handful of months I wanted to see how fast I could get it on a nice but pretty deserted stretch out by where I live. My speedos way out but I downloaded a gps speedo on my phone. When I finally chickened out the tach was at 4000 and the phone said 195KM/hr. I was happy enough that I haven't tried it again.

I got caught by a camera in the 70 olds, it was Nice because they mailed me some cool pics of areal shots  :drool5:

only cost me 125$, which is about what it would have cost pay a photographer to climb the light pole to take them  :shruggy:
