What would you guys recommend for a thermostat on my stock 383 A/C car.  There are dozens of brands and styles out there.  I know I want to go with the 195 degree unit but what brand should I be looking at?  I've scene a few NOS stats and they look just like the Mr. Gasket thermostats that are available new.  I just don't want to put a crap brand stat and have overheating issues.

got a Mr Gasket hi flow brass  180 degree thermostat in mine  , also  when I got  mine 25 years ago there was a  180 degree one in too ,  was working perfect , but changed it at the time of the resto   just because     , I always test them first too , by boiling them up on the cooker in a pot of water  :yesnod:  over thinking things yes i'm nuts like that , but actually  fitted a new thermostat that was faulty before , so now test them all

incedently  I have a NOS 180 degree thermostat ,  but decided on the new one  :shruggy:

also my charger come with a 180 degree thermostat from the factory  ,  because it was a early build 69 , it  had the  remains of the  warm climate decal on the core support , fit 180 degree thermostat , could just make out the wording   :P

I would stick with a known brand  MR Gasket  . Milodon ,  &  Stant / Gates

Decided to go with a Stant 45479 Superstat.  Hopefully it's a good choice.   :shruggy:

Related question:

The '68 shop manual states that engines came with 180* stats, yet most parts suppliers now list the 195* stat as 'OEM' specified, and the 180 as 'alternate'.    :shruggy:

Anyone have a good explaination for that?

Don't know.  Why would you want your engine to get to 195 before the thermostat started to let coolant through? Isn't that what we all talk about, keeping the engine cool.   :shruggy:

Yep, that's my point.   :yesnod:   Seems weird, and folks that don't know better will buy the 195 and think it's right.    :rotz:
