They Asked Me For I.D. To Buy Booze! (LOL)

First time in over 25 years I was asked, & with gray hair & a gray beard, I laughed my ass off, but they were dead serious. 

The computer printed tickets I got in the mail that I was so worried about being fake, were real. I took my 6 year old daughter to go see Nine Inch Nails at The House of Blues this past Saturday in Atlantic City. It was a great show & she loved it. That made it worthwhile keeping her up late. She did fall asleep for 15 minutes, but woke up for the last few songs.

They are very strict at the door & if you plan to go to the bar for a drink, they give you a wrist band, but not before checking I.D. to make sure. I had to ask the guy who looked to be about 20 if he was serious, & he said yes. No big deal, he's doing his job, but I still couldn't help but laugh. They patted me down & went over me with a hand held metal detector.

He asked if I smoked & I said no. Then he asked what was in my pocket, so I said my cell phone. He said, no, it feels like a box & looked worried. I reached in & pulled out my daughter's box of ear plugs & said "Earplugs, not cigarettes, those things will kill you." Off we went to find our seats which even thought were the last row in the balcony, were decent.

Here's some pics I took with the phone since you can't bring in a camera. But they did say cell cameras were okay. Sorry the image isn't so great, what do expect from a cheap cell phone?

The way I see it, if my daughter loves music as much as I do, why not just take her? She has been playing the piano for a few months now, (Her idea, not ours) & likes NIN. I found her a CD of NIN that's all piano music, & we also have a CD with just string instruments of NIN & surprisingly sounds fantastic. Trent Reznor & NIN may not be everyone's favorite, but his music training was classical, & he learned on the piano at 5 years old.

There's a lot of other amazing music that I keep finding all the time, just not on the radio.    

My parents weren't into a variety, dad was stuck in Doo Wop city, while mom was into Englebert Humperdink & Barry Manilow. My wife plays guitar, bass & sings in a blugrass band. I attempt the drums, but just to make some noise at home. I wish my parents took me to some concerts when I was younger, my first was Emerson Lake & Palmer in 1977 when I was in high school.

As for being a cool dad, I bet she won't think so when she's a teen & starts dating.

Bob, still cant picture you going to a NIN concert!   Music is a great learning experiance for kids.  At my kids school, they lost the music program for a few years due to budget cuts
They got it back just in time for my older daughter to start.  She plays the clarinet and has become very good at it for a 10 year old.   We take her to private lessons & a night band and she absoultely loves it.  She also plays the piano by herself.  She taught herself as well.
She is teaching my 7 year old the recorder now!

It's funny you mention the recorder Chris.  I just started remembering that thing from way back when I was a kid in Grade 3.  As I mentioned above, my 2 year old likes music, she sings along with her Mother and I thought that the recorder would be a great stepping stone into something else.  I gave her a whistle as she now realizes she is able to make her own music, as crude as it may be.  The recorder might make a nice present for Easter.

My wife is a K-12 music teacher, I play brass instruments, so you can pretty much be assured that my lil' girl will be introduced to some type of musical instrument (i.e. piano).

that IS verry cool!! my personal taste would be skid row nuge and kiss, but NIN is cool also. verry talented musicians especialy trent

Hey Chris, Why not? Is there some kind of restriction I don't know about?

I have to say that I didn't know who Trent Reznor was years ago, around 1989 to 1992, but did like the song "Head Like A Hole" when I had heard it. I think it was when "The Downward Spiral" came out that I was really hooked. I loved his use of the electronics & all the programmed effects, & was impressed somewhat when I found out he works mostly alone. (But not on tour.) This probably goes way back to the electronic music in the 70's I loved, like Tangerine Dream, Jean Michele Jarre, Patric Moraz, Gong, Triumvirat & others.

The guitar work in NIN isn't anything fancy, but the heavy riffs with all the distortion are very similar to some of King Crimson's work, which is a big favorite of mine. In fact, Adrian Belew from King Crimson is on several NIN albums. I will admit that the NIN lyrics are sometimes very dark, adult oriented, & not what very young kids should hear, so there are a few I don't let my daughter hear at all. The latest album, "With Teeth" is actually fine with the exception of a few 4 letter words. The context they are used in are not like in the song "Closer" & there is a lot less explaining to do. 

I'll be copying some NIN CD's she can have without certain songs on them. When she's older & picks all of these words up at school from other kids, she'll hear far worse than what is on a NIN CD.   

Funny thing, my daughter did attract some attention at the show. The barmaid asked her if she wanted those cherries in her soda & didn't charge me for her drink. People near us cracked a smile watching her dance along & singing. There was also this couple on the way out that had to come over to us & ask her if she liked the show. They made an impressions on her I'm sure, because they were really interested in her opinion, & even thanked me for bringing another new fan to a live show.

Like I mentioned, NIN is much less worrysome than explaining why Madonna, Britney Spears & Janet Jackson do a live sex show on stage. Even Madonna stated once that she wouldn't bring her kids to her own show. (Freakin' talentless hypocrite)

I saw them (really Trent) at MSG right after Downward Spiral came out. It was sick. Jim Rose circus was the opening act, and the pit was nuts. I remember Trent purposely trying to hurt his drummer. He was tossing keyboards and everything else at him, hoping to hurt him. It was all good.

Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, now there's a wacky show. 

Worked a couple shows where the Torture King (used to be in the JRCS) was the main act, and remember just being unable to take my eyes off the show.

Not good when you're working, I know, but the crowd just stood there in amazement anyhow.

On a random side-note: Filter's frontman, Richard Patrick (brother of Terminator 2's Robert Patrick [liquid terminator]), was a touring guitarist for NIN on their, "Hate Tour" (1990).

You definitely hear the influence from that on Filter's, "Short Bus", album IMO.

Makes for a good driving the Charger around album too.

Well Chris, there is this side of me that I do a damn good job at hiding, but I just found a box of old stuff in my attic that seems to have stirred it all up again. 

Maybe Trent's mellowed a bit, he only threw water bottles at the guitar player & the people in front of the stage this time.

Never heard of Jim Rose, but I'll have to look it up now out of curiosity. I have one Filter album, forget the name, & I did know Patrick was with Trent at one time. There's a few Marylin Manson songs I thought were okay, but I see MM more as a shock artist looking for attention than an actual musician. Some of it is okay. Ministry is another band I've been paying attention to, but don't have anything by them. Someone told me to get some of their early stuff, one called "Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste"

There are other electronic/industrial sounding bands I like, but I can't keep up with all of it. One of the internet radio programs called "Live 365" has a few channels that will play it, but I don't follow it close enough. Once in a while I'll write down a name of a band, put it in my wallet & if I'm in a record shop, oops, CD shop, I'll look for it. If I bought all the things I like, I'd be selling off my cars to afford it.

Oh yeah, the guy who opened for NIN Saturday was good, Saul Williams. He's actually from Newburgh, NY where I am. His sound was similar to a metal/rap & not bad at all. My wife took my daughter to his book signing a few days before the show & spoke to him. He was happy to know my daughter was going to his show & said he'd look for her there.   My daughter kept asking me if I thought he saw her in the balcony, so I said maybe.

That's a great Ministry album to start on. "Psalm 69", is great too. Have you heard of a band called Skinny Puppy? Their earlier stuff influenced Trent when he was starting out, and it's just cool music. Not for everyone, but good industrial. KMFDM is also good. As is Front Line Assembly. FLA did work with Fear Factory (awesome metal!!!) and produced a kick@$$ album called, "Fear Is The Mindkiller", that you might want to check out too.

How cool that the guy took the time to talk to your daughter.
