How to remove rear quarter window assy. on 2nd gen?

Any advice on how to remove all these different tracks and brackets? Can any just remain in place? (I've searched and have links for install and adjust but not tear down/removal.)  :shruggy:

Hard Charger

remove the glass first and then take a lot of pictures.

protect the rear quarter when reinstalling, it can get scratched up.

I disassembled my entire car, every nut and bolt, with the exception of 3 of the window regulators. the one I did remove , drivers rear quarter, due to a quarter replacement was the most difficult aspect of reassembly I did on the entire car restoration. I will not remove the passenger side.

I thought I read somewhere that someone took it out in one piece, I tried and failed. I ended up dis assembling it in chunks inside the quarter area. Re greased everything, cleaned it up and changed a wheel  or two and put it back the exact opposite. It was a bit of brain salad but the second side went much quicker once you remember the sequence.  Good luck

Just a thought, when I took the regulators out of mine I stretched the opening by about a quarter inch and the reg came out in one piece.  You'll have to push it back into place after you install the regulator.  Here's a picture, I don't think you can see where I widened the opening, but it made it possible to get the reg out in one piece.

I'm pretty sure I took mine out in one piece. It was definitely an unpleasant job, a second set of hands is helpful. I left one side in so I could see how it went back together. Adjusting the window was equally as fun :brickwall: :brickwall:

The best way I have found to do it (not the easiest) Is to pretty much disassemble it inside the quarter panel. I have done it a few times now and the last couple of times it went fairly quick (I guess because I got used to it). This is going on memory so I hope I don't miss any steps. First remove the glass, thats the easiest thing (2 bolts), you will have to lower the window some to access them. Next is the glass bracket. You have to reach through the top opening, and remove the spring clips that attach the regulator arm to the bracket, then unbolt and remove the 2 tracks through the top opening. After removing the tracks, you should be able to remove the bracket through the top opening also. After all that is out, you and remove the regulator though the largest opening in the inner quarter panel. Thats how I do it, and I think its in that order.... I will find out again soon, I am going to have to remove the right rear quarter regulator on the 68 soon.

what I done  , before removing anything  , draw round the bolts & number them on the inner rear quarter frame with a marker pen , & take pictures etc , as you dismantle the parts  fit  & bolt them back together on some really thick cardboard , so the winder is exactly how it is in the car , do that for both sides & label & number the bolts to ,  , be carefull when moving said window winder mechanism around on the card board , if your not careful can put stress on the plastic rollers ,
by having them assembled on the cardboard , a  day or week or month or 3 years from now , you will know how it all goes back in the car ! ,  when I was doing the resto on mine  , left the rear winder mechenisms to the very last parts to take off , because it looked a nightmare  :o that's when I came up with , building them up on thick card board idea !!  worked for me  3 years later ,  went back together easy !!  although  adjusting all side glass &  vent window frames   if the whole car has been taken to bits , is a nother  long story , factor in a whole weekend to get it dialled in as good , especially if your using new weatherstrips

think I spoke about & showed pictures on the above , in a thread sometime ago , just done a search  , cant find it  :scratchchin:  although could of been on the old site  :P

Glad to see I'm not the only one to chicken on on this part, my passenger side panel is still apart from my attempt to remove the chrome trim, deeper i got the more I hated it, finally decided the window fuzzy just wasn't bad enough to justify all that work, and neither was the trim piece.  Put the trim back on, still have to put the plastic piece with clips back in and put the upper door panel back together.  If the actual windows had problems I would have kept at it, but both of mine work fine still, even if they are a bit stiff compared to the front.

Got a FSM?  It has some decent instructions if you add the help you get on here.

The FSM does not really cover removal at all, just adjustments. So I sprayed all the bolt/brackets with leftover silver paint to mark exact locations before tear down. (Like Tan Top's suggestion.) I kinda cheated doing this redo because I bought 99% of the regulator assy. and repair set so I had a lot ready to re-install.
So 1st I snapped all the bolts that hold the windows to the frames....no worries I have extra!
next all three stops come out.
then the long guide rails lower support removed (There is a hidden nut that holds the rail to the support.)and the top adj. nut
pull the bottom guide wheel thing down and off by cranking the handle up down to remove from window holding frame.
Now crank the handle up/down till you can pull the long rail out of the car and slide top wheel thing off frame
At this point undo and remove all the other brackets and guides, again cranking up and down to slide things apart, just recall how/where stuff went.
Last I cranked the window frame up so high it starts to come out the top slot, THEN unbolt the crank's 3 bolts.
The crank and window holder will come out still attached to each other, The crank spline clears by pulling all the way to the door opening and moving it an odd angle, there is just enough room with the rubber boot off.
I was careful NOT to disturb the in/out adjusters settings as mine were spot on! Reverse this order for putting back in the order removed and mine came back together very close to perfect. I did this with the doors windows in original locations as a guide for positioning also.

did you try  slackening the bolts off , on  the rear side glass  lower stop , then you can wind it down  1/2  -& inch lower , to expose all the belt mounding screws , to get a Phillips screw driver on them  :yesnod:

Yes, all you did, but then comes the time that you need to remove the regulator with the attached "push bar".  I don't know what it's called.  They are connected with a roller that you have to disconnect and it has one of those "star" washers.  This is where it gets tough.  You can work it around to the point where you stick that above the window opening and fool around with it or...like I said just push the gap open a little and lift it out in one piece.  Maybe I should make a thread???

Given the specs on these old cars some may have a big enough gap, mine didn't.

Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Can you access the regulator mechanism from the trunk? I remember reading something about it..

Lord Warlock

I exposed the screws, but they wouldn't come out, either rusted in place or the heads were softened to where they'd strip.  figured i'd have to drill them out and use larger screws.  In my situation the chrome trim was in good shape but had paint buildup along the bottom edge since i painted the car with the trim on, i wanted to remove it sand it smooth and reinstall new fuzzy, i did get the outer fuzzy changed, and ended up taking an exacto knife and slowly trimming the paint buildup out from under the bottom edge.

I'm still interested in the topic though, as I expect the mechanism inside needs to be lubed to make it work easier, it seems tighter to roll up the windows in the back compared to the front windows.

yes lube the runners & rollers !   to be honest !! they really need taking out & cleaning first ,  then grease lubricate stuff

The star clips can be replaced with an "E Clip" and washer if needed.  :2thumbs:
