Rougher than rough 68 Charger 383 4 speed

I went and looked at this 68 today. Brought a trailer along but decided not to buy. It's a 383 4 speed non r/t. Missing drivers door, trunk lid and most of the floors. Front frame rails actually looked usable. Rear rails gone. Seats laying inside. Dash hacked up. Headlights and actuators are there. No motor, trans, rear end. No title but vin tag present. I said what the hell when I got there but the more I looked at it, I was afraid of ripping it in half winching it on the trailer. So much rust the a-arms are rusted and broke. The seller told it it was rough and not expect much. I was thinking of building a chrome moly tube frame type chassis for it. The car was $1000. I don't think it was astronomically high considering some others I've seen.

There isn't a thousand dollars worth of anything on that carcass.

Dunno the grill looks decent...if it's crack free that's a grand right there

The surround piece isn't too bad but its missing the center grill. What's the deal with the numbers stamped on the core support? Are they suppost to match the vin?

Yup, not even a thousand dollars in parts. Some newbie with grandiose dreams will buy that thinking he got a deal.

I think it would sell if it had a title.

Not on a 68, they match the vehicle order number (VON) which only can be paired with the VIN if you have a broadcast sheet.

i've seen worse  :scratchchin:, but i would be happier to pay 100$ for it with half the frame missing

if it had both tail lights, sure!  If the grill was complete sure!  The doors maybe, but all that rust HELL NO!!!!

Looks like there might be some sheet metal for patching a better ride here.

Exactly, there's a "few" parts left to recoupe your G note back, plus a title and VIN tag would bring in another $500 worth of "parts"

These 383 4 sp cars always seem worked over.
They led a rough life probably.
Still deserves a better fate then rotting away.
1 of 259 right?
If the vin is there a title can be acquired.

I'm not a body repair guy, so I'm really curious what kind of money would it realistically take to get this to a nicely restored (not trailer queen) state?

Would it only be feasible with no or little labor cost such as you and maybe a buddy doing much of the work?

Chad L. Magee

I would buy it if I had the time and space to work on it.  But, I already have one (383-2bbl. version) that was rolled back in the day.  Yes, this one needs some sheetmetal TLC and plenty of $ to bring it back, so it is not for anyone on a strict budget without a large stash of parts....

But,

How many people can have a factory big block 4-speed non-RT second-gen Charger in their stash of toys to play with?  Think about it a bit more from that perspective.  It is a rare one nonetheless....

Another question:

What was the interior and vinyl roof colors per the fender tag?  Does anyone know?....

Daytona R/T SE

I had a 68 four speed car that was in much better shape than that. :scratchchin:

I took what I needed from it, including air chiseling out the 4-speed hump. :hack:

...And sent that rusty green hunk of shit down the road.

I'd tell the guy you'll give him a hundred bucks for everything you can strip off of it in a day...

Then leave the rest to rot where it sits.

yeah remember that yellow 383 four speed 2 barrel that was for sale a few years back , had been or was still sitting in a swamp at the time of the advert !!

then there was another white one that had been gutted & caged used on some sort of dirt track  !!

this green one is a nother rare car ,  if I was 20 years younger & could get it for  next to nothing , I would  sort it out /rebuild it  :yesnod:  , although if you cant do the work your self , going to cost with labour time  :yesnod:  then parts , cant see it getting fixed properly sad to say , think its done for ,  think most who could afford to get it restored , would rather sink their money into a R/T :Twocents:

Cooter

There will come a time when this will be a prize when all those stupid rare cars are gone...
no more R/T's, no more Hemis, no more Daytona, no more nothing but plain ol roaches....

Then, we will see who's in it ti win it. Money will not matter as the buyers Of these cars will be forced to learn the art of metal work, as well as filler work. The supply of scuff and shoot cars are fading weekly. Of course everybody wants that 'easy' resto.
