Blood Moon

Anybody else in NA stay up to watch the eclipse tonight?  It's still in its reddish state at the moment.  Mars is visible as well at about the 2 o clock position of the moon.  If you didn't see it, there's supposed to be 3 more eclipses between now and Sept of next year.

I just enjoyed it to its fullest.  (pun intended).

It was an awesome evening last night at midnight (Pacific Time).  Calm as could be, about 62 degrees, with only an owl hooting on the hillside.  Lunar eclipse was scheduled and wow did it ever arrive in full techno-color.  I took over one hundred pics, these are the ones that looked good.  Used a basic Fuji 8200, set to automatic and night settings, mounted on a tri-pod, advanced to 40x telephoto, and just kept pushing the button.

The nearly full eclipse.  The blue star to the right of the moon is Spica, the brightest star in the constellation of Virgo.



Eclipse at about 12:25 am, it is orange to the naked eye, sort of cooper in the photo.



My favorite, the combination of the orange moon, Spica to the right, and Mars higher above and to the right.



At about 12:45 the moon turned sharp red in an instant – the Blood Moon – and Spica showed a strong blue to the eye and in the photo.



The Blood Moon lasted for ½ hour.  The owl kept a steady hooting rhythm.  What a night.

We got a few inches and broke the 93.6" record set in the late 1800's.  Funny enough nobody is celebrating this one.

We did. In fact we saw it from our living room window.......didn't even have to go outside.

The red and blue stars always amaze me, even with a pair of binocs or a cheap scope they look amazing. Every now and then we head into the Stardome Observatory to go to a lecture and then view through the 50cm Cassegrain. Now thats amazing!
