440....to be or not to be...???

I picked up a 73 Charger about a month ago that has a 1974 440 motor in it. The motor has been rebuilt, was supposed to have come out of a challenger, and the seller told me that it now has a purple cam, the pistons are not stock, but are rounded, but no real info on them. New crank, and He thinks it is the good steel crank. Bored .030 over, and it should have more HP than stock. That is about all I know about it, other than that is starts right up, sounds great, idles fine, and runs good as far as I can tell here in my drive way.
Once I finish resto on this car, I will use it mostly for around town and for cruise nights, etc. I do want to be able to drive it anywhere, though and to not worry the whole trip if it is gonna break down.
I am sort of "thinking out loud" as to whether to keep the 440, or to sell it and pick up a good 318 for the car. I wonder what the 440 would be worth, and how much a 318 would cost, and how much cash I would have left from all that changing to use to  finish resto on the car. I love the sound of the 440, and it would be nice to keep, but my interest is more in cruising a classic Charger, than in the motor size, and I could use the money from selling the 440 to finish the car.
I have my 2012 Charger for the road, so this 73 will be more of a "toy", so I lean more toward keeping the 440, but I am 55 years old, and do not really need all the HP that I wanted when I was younger, so, anyway...I would be interested in hearing what you all might be able to suggest concerning these thoughts! Thanks and have a great day!

Just my  :Twocents:
I won't speculate on what the previous owner knew was in the 440, but I think you're ahead of the game. Especially the "starts right up, sounds great, and idles fine" part.

A 318 is no more reliable than a 440.  My guess is that after you change everything over to a 318, it will be a net money loser.  You might not want a bunch of power, but it is hard to imagine that you would not enjoy the extra power you will have with the 440.  You can make it as docile as you want.  And you can get close to 20 mpg ( highway cruise) if you work smart on part selection and tuning.   :Twocents:

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

I wanted a 318 cruising as well but ended up with a 440.  It's not very economical but it's so much fun there is no way I'm going to a 318 now.

If you're only going to cruise a bit, a 318 would be just fine though.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

With a 440 in it the car will be worth more.
