Modern cars have the same gutters but they are a lot bigger.  Wide & deep enough to hold a golf ball instead of barely enough for a marble.  That's what older cars needed.

Promo shots.. they built 1000's of cars and it's all they were back then..cars, not the highly valued items we consider them now! That said, I would have had less work to do on my restoration if my GF from '78 '79 hadn't done stuff like this..

Thank goodness she was buckling the hood and roof of a Coronet & not a Charger.
