So probably been asked before, but as I sit here reading about all the knowledge that is collected on this site, and all the AMAZING cars...(and expensive cars) I sometimes find myself thinking :scratchchin: what do all of you guys and gals do for a living? We all have these cars that connect us in some way but are we all connected in other ways too? So fill in some blanks if you don't mind sharing....WHAT DO YOU ALL DO FOR A LIVING?!?!?!?!

Chad L. Magee

Assistant chemistry professor at a state university is my profession.  It has its ups and downs depending upon who/what you teach at the time.  Tuesdays is my research day, so I spent it working on my chemical projects.  Today, I made a new compound that has not been reported in the chemical literature yet.  That means I get to characterize it, write a large paper on it and hopefully get it published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal this year.  If I am lucky, it will do what I have designed it to do in the next reaction process and I will have to write many more papers on it.  Yes, I like to complicate my life....

Cool, N scale. That was always my favorite, but not very many people seem like it. Probably because most model railroaders have bad eyesight.  :P

I am a forklift mechanic for a living. We work on almost any kind of material handling equipment. I do work on cars, trucks, and SUV's sometimes on the weekends. Mostly for close friends and family to keep them from being ripped off by the up town garages that charge ridiculous hourly rates. Not all are rip off's but alot of horror stories about a few garages in town.  Had a couple different cars and old trucks years back and when the dukes came back on TNN I saw the charger and sold all the others I had and bought my charger and been into mopar's every since!!

The world I work in is heavy industrial construction.

The craft I'm in is construction millwright.  My position (the last 30 years) is general forman or above depending on the job.

Most of my jobs are power generating---Dams---gas/coal/nuk/etc. Others are movable bridges, paper machines, food processing, water treatment, steel mills -------

What I do is install new stuff and repair or upgrade the old.

Restoring these old cars that we do is much like what I do with things that are bigger. (usually much bigger). But there is mechanical sameness. Nuts and bolts and bearings are all the same.

An example--I was assembling some bearings for a railroad lift span bridge. One complete bearing with housing was 25 tons and held 180 gallons of grease and their were 16 of them. Some factory reps. from the brg. manufacturer came to visit and asked me if I had experience with bearings this large (at the time they were the largest capacity of the type rated for 500 tons ea.)  I said no but how could I since these are the first and reminded them that for me there are two types of bearings of this style. Ones I can pick up by hand and those that are too heavy.  They seemed to appreciate that response.

I'm debating retirement these days but the work is great fun, my health is good and the people that pay me are not jack asses.
