They certainly flow better, how much depends on the manifold in comparison.  For me personally if I am going to hassle of changing them over I want a better gain than the shorty's will give in a lot of applications.

If there are any headers that are built to fit only engines using the stock starter and NOT any mini starter, it may be because of the position of the solenoid. I had a set of Doug Thorley A body small block headers that were that way.
