I apologize, I had to laugh when I read it.  Mind you, I am not laughing at your misfortune, but at the fact that it's something I could've done.   

It's a very good note to self and others so thanks for sharing that.  How bad is the burn?

The Doctor had to cut off the first layer of skin on my palm.  He said that it didn't go to third degree though.  Guess I'm lucky.  Just have to watch for infection....

That's why I asked.  Did the doc really use degrees of burn?  I have not heard that in a while.  We got rid of that quite a while ago as it was not very accurate.  We now use partial and full thickness so if you're looking at the old 2nd degree, that's a partial thickness burn meaning it burned the epidermis (top skin layers) and a shallow part of the dermis.  That's the meat of the skin and where the goodies are.  3rd degree is now a full thickness burn which burns deep into the dermis and deep full thickness has it go down to the muscle and bone. 

Infection is the highest risk here so to keep it simple, the only thing touching your burn should be sterile gauze and air.  (limit the latter as air causes more pain).  Are you up to date on a tetanus shot?

Also, it is important to up your water intake.  It's important all the time for everyone to drink lots of water but that's another story.  The high risk of burns are infection but also toxicity.  Your immune system goes in overdrive, even with a little burn, and you will have more waste products to get rid off so drink lots of water.  Real water, not water that was used to make coffee.

I have done that myself, checking to see if the stove is hot   I don't know how many times I switched hands with a hot pan from the oven and guess what no oven mitt on my left hand   Burns are no fun, hope you recover quickly Robert

They gave me a tetanus shot as I hadn't had one in decades.  It's all wrapped up in gauze.  Not looking forward to changing the dressing and washing though.  I'll go get some ice water now. Thanks....

Sorry to here this RECHRGD. I've been there myself, different scenario. (tipped a bucket of boiling water into my gumboot, ended it with very severe burns to the whole of the foot and in particular the in step) Was laid up for three weeks and the pain was excruciating (no pain killers).

Another reason not to put your hand out to break your fall is that you may very well break your hand (wrist). Of course, if you don't.......you might end up flat on your face.

had a friend who lent on a VERY hot BBQ plate while pissed ,had to use the spatula to get hand off as was stuck and turning brown      mmmm yummy

Sounds like you are seeing a doctor, and have others who know more.  I would pay close attention to what they recommend.

I have to change the dressing once a day.  My wife just did it for the first time. Good God, it's ugly.

Keep an eye on it.  My worst one didn't hurt, but I realized it was burning because of the sound and smell.  It healed though after some time.

oh crikey , sorry to hear this ,
I remember good few years ago when I was a kid ,   burning a load of wood & stuff  ,&  using a hollow  aluminum rod to poke it around    & stir  it up  like you do  ,  lent the rod  up against the wall , it fell over , went to pick it up  grabbed hold of the wrong end   not good , let go , the skin on my palm & under side of my fingers  ,  was a mess   should of gone to hospital maybe , just stuck my hand in a jug of water all evening , & fell asleep with it in there , had a few days off school if I remember as I could  pick up a pen    , remember my Dad going nuts at what I done

And it stinks or at least mine did. The smell was so overpowering I had to hold my nose.

Oh just man up will ya!       Just kiddin. Burns are a very serious thing. Follow drs orders to the T! Having a burn on your hand is so annoying, cuz how do you hold onto a mopar steering wheel?   Guess the wife gets to drive?  Feel better buddy!

The only "upside" to burns on the hands is that hands heal faster than any other body part......the palm specifically. Not much of a conciliation though.

Except for the inside of your mouth . . . That is the fastest I'm told . . .

Plus the inside of your mouth can take a whole lot more heat too. How many times do you scold yourself with hot coffee etc without coming away sore or if it is sore, it's healed by the next day.
The only thing that really, really hurts like hell is when you bight your tongue  OUCH!
