Got the new engine and new trans/shifter bolted in but Z bar is not connected to the fork yet,my question is when I went to push the car up to close the garage it will not go into neutral even though the shifter is there, before I installed driveshaft I could easily shift to all the gears.I can rock the car and push shifter into gear but when I pull it down where N should be its still in gear and the car wont move-as stated the clutch is not hooked up yet but shouldn't I be able to get it out of gear?
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

Sounds like you may have the shifter out of adjustment, and you are stuck in two gears at the same time. How familiar are you with that particular transmission?  Has it been rebuilt..ect..?

Yeah I got it from brewers,I mounted and adjusted the shifter on the Trans on the bench attached to the engine and it all shifted well

You shouldn't have to rock the car to shift it, even without a functioning clutch. Something is binding somewhere. I had one lock on me once, and it ended up being the sheetmetal strap inside the cover. But I couldn't move the car whatsoever. Can you roll it with just some resistance,or are the wheels locked?

Yes it's completely locked, what do u mean metal strap?i just put my clutch cover on also

moparsr2fast

It is an interlock. Maybe. 062 " thick, 1" wide, and about 6" long. I haven't had one of these apart in over 10 years, so this is just memory, but they can and do break, and things lock up when that happens. It is right inside the cover.

Ok there's nothing inside the cover, are you talking about something on or around the bell housing?
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

moparsr2fast

No, this is inside the transmission itself.  Without having a clutch hooked up, your engine is mated directly to the trans unless you are in neutral. If you can't shift into neutral, the problem can only be inside the trans.

Holy crap I hope that's not it,this has been a nightmare installation already and I can't imagine removing it and sending it back-ill call brewers after I hook the clutch up and no improvement, dam I hope that's not it!

It is a simple fix if that is indeed the problem. Neutral should be very easy to feel with the shifter when you are in it. Did you say you couldn't shift the trans unless you rocked the car?  Something else to check... try turning the engine over with a wrench. You are checking to make sure none of the bolts in the flywheel are to long and hitting the block.

Did you set up the linkage adjustment yourself?

Yes I followed the instructions to the T w it on the bench attached to engine,it shifted fine till I installed driveshaft in car
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

moparsr2fast

Did the instructions tell you how run a drill thru the hole in all the rods for the initial setup?

Dodgerdallas

No it was Hurst and everything lined up perfectly, the thing would shift as long as it was up on jack stands but when I installed driveshaft and lowered it down is when problem started-wierd
This is gonna be cheap and easy......

moparsr2fast

You have to set neutral first when setting up the linkage. There is a hole in each of the three arms. They need to be aligned by ronning a drill thru all three holes before adjusting the linkage itself, or you will get a bind even if it feels like it is shifting freely with the trans out on a bench.

It came w a small plastic rod that was thru them, that may have been what u speak of- had pull it out to proceed

moparsr2fast

Emergency break?  Unhook the driveshaft from the axle. See if you can shift it easily  then.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do,during all this it was up on jack stands behind the front wheels and w the unibody it sort of hung down in the front,I'm wondering if when I lowered it it didn't bind up somehow-oh well I'll see thank you for the info I'm hittin the sack bud any more info ill get it in the morning thanks!

Troy

So, to be clear, you can still "shift" the shifter but the transmission appears to be locked in place and the car won't roll?

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Dodgerdallas

Got her figured out-little probl w the linkage, peers I didn't do enough cutting on that Trans hump!
