What is the best way to disconnect the temp control cable from the button?

I have took a few months away from the car to recharge the batteries after the holidays (only to find out the wife is pregnant with twins, there goes the extra car money, lol).  I finally got back to the car today and was going to remove the heater/temp control buttons on the dash and repaint/clean them up.  I disconnected everything pretty easy except the cable for the temp.  I am afraid of trying to remove the press on washer in fear I might break the plastic stud on temp button.  What is the best and safest way to remove the cable so I can do the work on it?

Thanks.
Over?! its not over until we say it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!...Hell no! and its not over now!..(Germans? Pearl Harbor?...shut up, he's on a roll)

never mind.  I used a needle nose and bent the washer back so it was loose enough to remove.  Looks like if I flatten it back out I can reuse it.

Ya,  I was thinking the same thing.  I have to get the buttons off to get them all black again first :)
