1st off, let me say I'm not asking for anything from folks here, most of you are in the same boat i'm in (or worse).  But there are people out there that like to help others AND are in a position to do so

wandering around on line and found this, started me thinking, has anyone here done this for ANYTHING??

keep thinking i'll find a way to get this done but just like everyone else here, something/somebody always seems to get in the way/need repair-help, family, friends, house, car, bad decisions on vacations (yes, i'm regretting my Maui vacation even though it was only the 2nd one in 25 yrs)

i'm figuring 20-35K to finish it, at $20 each thats  only 1000-1750 people from the WHOLE WORLD, seems fairly plausible, maybe 7 Billion people, figure under 18 and over 60 can't afford anything so whats left??  even if its only 1 percent (low side) of a billion that leaves 1 million people to reach and only get 1750 is like 1 tenth of 1 percent of a million people

how is this idea different from someone giving parts to someone in need to finish a project, these people won't have any Charger parts to give me??    I can see the ability to tailor this towards fraud but that's not my character.

maybe i'm just convincing myself.  I was in such a good spot last Thanksgiving, finally ready to go, motivated, financially stable again and now........ i just don't know.  Its not like i'm out buying new cars or LCD tvs or anything.

sure glad you folks are here as a sounding board or i would be talking to Mary in the garage for hours...... still.....

I'd have to agree with Chargerguy.
Now at the risk of sounding like a jerk, but you did ask for opinions remember.

You obviously as in a reasonably decent situation. Maybe not where you want to be, but neither is 99% of the rest of the people. Myself, my project is stalled due to funding, at least for awhile.  I drive old junk cars because I just can't afford to buy myself something new. I finally took out a loan and bought the wife a car just so we had 1 vehicle that was trustworthy. My truck is 22 years old. It has 189,000 miles on it, it has rust, and dents, and low oil pressure. lol But its mine, its paid for. I also have a roof over my head, food in my belly, and a wife that loves me. Sometimes. Depends on the day. I even have enough extra cash to play with my hobbys once in awhile, but yes things happen and I tend to struggle once in awhile. House repairs, truck repairs to limp it along alittle longer, etc.

My wife and I's idea of vacation is a weekday trip to a casino, because they have 45 dollar hotel rooms during the week, and it gets us out of our daily grind.

I wouldn't dream of asking people to help pay for my "toys" Because that is what you are proposing. Asking for help to play with a toy.

We have had some people on here get donations. The one in particular I am mentioning is due to medical issues and being forced with selling to survive. Also, that was not asked for. It was offered.

In summation, I would highly recommend not taking this route. I cannot see any good coming from it, and believe me, if it got out to the mopar community that you did pull it off, you probably wouldn't be getting any deals on any parts, since nobody would take it real well.

Sorry to draw it out, but like I said, you asked.

Back N Black

I guess it depends on how dedicated you are with restoring your car. I worked nights and weekends to get funds to restore my car. I built the charger and did not take from my regular paycheck. I figured 2 hours watching TV could be 2 hours making money. :Twocents:

JB400

I would have to agree with what's already been mentioned.  It's none of my business to ask, but you should really look at what you spend your money on.  For example:  Going to convenience store to get a coke.  It costs $1.50 here for a 20 oz. bottle.  Instead of the coke, you could get a cup of water and spend a quarter.  It's OK to treat yourself out every once in a while, but that's an extra buck and a quarter you could put towards the Charger.

Like I said, it's none of my business how you spend your money, nor do I want to know.  But every little bit adds up.  It might help you if you give yourself a dedicated Charger fund.  Put your loose change in it and maybe slip a $20 bill every week.  Maybe, even $5 a day.  Just keep it separate from the family accounts.

Lord Warlock

I've seen sites like this and other car sites donate for worthy causes, like someone who was diagnosed with cancer and had no healthcare,  but getting multiple sites to do similar acts is next to impossible.  The simple truth is that you spend what you can, when you can, and when funds are tight, you focus on things that are labor intensive, because labor is free (your labor).  Watching your spending is an obvious tactic, there are lots of ways to cut expenses, not everything is a necessity.  Do you really need cell phones? high speed internet, cable tv, household AC, etc, all things I've cut back on at one point or another.

On the other hand, spending money on secondary cars isn't always a good investment either, its a luxury item.  And they almost never bring more than you put into them, love affairs are rarely cheap.  For 30 years I've bought 2nd hand or used cars for myself to drive daily, usually choosing a better car for the wife to drive than I have myself, when I turned 50 I broke from that pattern and bought my first new car in my life, and even then I cut corners and chose a practical car rather than the biggest and baddest I could afford.  Like every car before it, I'll put 100k on it before I sell it (or store it).

Best to do what you can when you can, and don't worry about how long it takes to get there, if you keep at it, eventually you'll finish it.  20k  spread out over 10 years or so really isn't that painful, if you can get it past the wife and kids.  If by chance you do figure out a way to get the world to donate a penny apiece or a dollar feel free to share it, the rest of us would like a chance at the golden ring as well, or we could always buy a lottery ticket.

Recently my dad decided to liquidate several of his toys and pass the proceeds from the sale to his two remaining kids (one died (younger brother) 3 years ago from leukemia, it equates to our inheritance that we'd get in his will when he passed away, it wasn't a huge sum, only around 15k in cash each, not near enough to do anything life changing for either of us, but I allows us to have a little emergency fund for he first time in our lives, in my case it will likely only cover my kids weddings and some dental work I've been needing for 10 years,  or it could be set aside for an emergency in the future,  I hold no illusions that I'll die rich myself, I won't even get a paid retirement like he did, I doubt i'll be able to retire and enjoy the last 20 years of life for me,  I'll have to work till i'm 70, then hope what I've squirrelled away for retirement is enough to get us by.  As you get older, you'll usually make better money in your job, and hopefully its enough to set aside some.  Too bad it never seems to be enough, and the stock market manages to crash every 10 years or so and eat up 50% or about 10 years worth of saving.   At least I can say that at my age i'm actually earning more now than any time in my lifetime, and this job will qualify me for a higher salary at the next job...hopefully.

I have a 2nd job (fixing cars for people/doing bodywork) just so I can have extra money for Charger and my backup funds. I don't go asking for hand outs. I don't smoke/drink, dont go to restaurants, don't have cable, mow my own yard and often have cup of noodles for breakfast at work. As a sounding board that is an interesting what if to run through mentally.  Can see your point considering funds to restore all different kinds of historic equipment and machines.  What is the difference between restoring a vietnam tank or a 66 charger?  Or art work for that matter.
Than again most of those end up in museums and not personal property.

Not sure how plausible the personal property restoration funding is though.  Especially how often people are hit as it is anymore.  That and you better setup some kind of nonprofit before the IRS starts digging into those.  That could be some an interesting angles.
