Why is 440 better then 426?

I used to have my alarm clock set to go off at 4:40AM, but changed that to 4:30 because I'm always up and usually out of the bedroom when the alarm went off. Funny thing is there are many mornings I will wake up, take a look at the clock and see 4:26... Then there are morning I'll wake up long before that.
