Apparently it's purpose built for people in wheelchairs.    Oddly enough, it's not built for the handicapped to actually DRIVE it, just ride in it.

Talk about getting 99 yards and fumbling at the goal line.   My bro's been in a chair for 25 years and I've often wondered when someone will come out with a package or and OEM retrofit for a production vehicle for this kind of thing, instead of just bolting in hand controls and a ramp.

It would seem that moms (or other types of caretakers) who have handicapped dependents would benefit most from this, but they really should look at producing a purpose-built machine that lets a wheelchair user wheel in and lock down in the driver's position, and have native integrated hand controls.

Anyone here ever drive a car with just hand controls?  It's a... harrowing experience to say the least.

Sure have, I was a volunteer and worked on converting cars and vans into wheelchair accessible ones.
Pretty freaky to just use your hands isn't it?   :icon_smile_big:

I only made two that would lock the chair in place so it became the driver's seat.  There's just no market to do this in production, way too many variables.

That said, you tell me what he wants to drive and I'll tell you how to make it.  Ton of fun as well by the way.  The most satisfying body work I have ever done, hands down.

Right on, Dino.

The last car he had was a Cadillac Sedan DeVille with a Northstar in it and controls fitted.   He mostly just takes cabs everywhere these days to avoid the hassle.   And you're right, it's really weird to twist the throttle and go, but even stranger when you push down on the brake with your hand.    Fun doing burnouts and donuts though with a flick of the wrist... Northstars had quite a bit of torque :)

Yeah that was a pretty decent engine.  Sure is fun to drive it once you're used to it.

It takes a lot of work to turn a car into a full wheelchair car, meaning the chair becomes the driver's seat.  Much easier to do with a van.  I've actually taken an old power chair and transplanted the captain's chair from a G20 on it so when the owner drove his chair into his van, it locked into place behind the wheel and from the outside nobody could tell it was anything special.  The backend was closed because the owner wanted an A-Team type van (minus the colors) so we made it so the entire backend opened up like a ramp.  I wish I still had the pictures.
