Since Friday my engine will not run at idle. The engine dies unless I keep the idle up. When it runs at high idle, there is a soft popping out of both tailpipes. The fuel is old, from last fall. I have only about a 1/4 tank. I assumed it was bad fuel. I put some additives that are supposed to fix bad (10% ethanol) fuel. I also put 5 gallons of fresh 92 octane. This didn't seem to help. I am planning on pulling the top of the edelbrock carb off. I am going to give it a good cleaning with carb clean and possibly throw a rebuild kit into it. Am I looking at the right thing? Does it sound like a carb/fuel problem? I was thinking about pulling the AFB off my 383 which runs great and putting it on the 440 to see if it is the carb or not.
I would love some input of what you guys think.

When did the engine run last and how did it run?  Have you changed anything since then?  How does the car run currently?  Regardless of idle.  If the fuel gummed up in the carb, the idle circuits may be a bit clogged.  I would remove it and drop the other carb on to see if it runs.  It's quick and easy and you don't even have to connect the linkage.  Just bolt it on and see if it idles.  If it does, rebuild or replace the paperwei...I mean the edelbrock.   :D   :nana:

Jump/ bypass your ballast resistor to make sure it did not go bad and/ or swap coils.
