1968 Dodge Charger Going Resto Mod

I bought this Charger when I was 16, back in 1976. Long story, but the short one is I am now, or at least think I am, going to have it restored.
It is a dark green, with a 318. I am 3rd owner.

First thing is I have always hated green, so going bright red.

I had the 318 rebuilt and bored out about 15 years ago. I know there is less than 20 miles on the motor. I have NO paperwork on the rebuilding. It was only driven from one end of town to the other about 4 years ago, and sitting since.

Now after all these years, I have decided to go the Resto-mod direction and am looking for a decent mileage drop out 5.7 or 6.1 to replace the 318.

$$$ will help decide whether I go with 5.7 or 6.1.

Question 1) Any ideas on finding a good reliable source for this type of motor.

Question 2) Any idea on what value my rebuilt 318 is or how to sell and or auction or trade towards what I am looking for?

Any tips are appreciated as well.

First off, welcome to the site.  As far as options for a motor, you have the choice of a local dealership and order one new, or you can buy a wrecked Magnum, Charger, 300, Jeep Cherokee, or Challenger to get the motor.  SRT's will have your 6.1.  Also, places like Indy Cylinder Heads offer crate engines as well.  Just depends on your budget.  At least you will be able to mount up your current trans or step up to a modern overdrive unit farily easy.  I haven't put one of these motors in my car yet, but others have.

If you do go with the junkyard solution, I suggest buying the motor in the car and pulling the motor and other accessories yourself.

Consider the truck 360 with EFI as a bolt in solution.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Welcome!

Here's a place to get some ideas, and maybe an engine.  http://www.bpeusa.com/

I would say the 318 is worth its weight at the scrapyard.

unless it is its matching block....

Atlas

It is the original 318, not sure what is meant by matching block. Unfortunately I have to rely on others as I am not mechanically inclined.

Right now I am most likely looking for a drop out 5.7 or 6.1

Duane Sterr hahaha thanks, I guess I'll go have it weighed.

Sucks I paid about $2,200 and now worthless?

Atlas look on www.clevelandpickapart.com they sometimes have drop out 5.7 and 6.1 hemi's for sale. Usually come all together with motor, trans and the ecm. If not then give them a call and let them know what you are looking for and when they will get one in they will let you know. Not a bad price and a lot cheaper than trying to piece one together.

Thanks Memphis will do for sure.

Stroker and all I thank you for any and all help.

Not deep pockets, after the long story I didn't bore y'all with, but still want a decent car when Im done.

Always plenty available on car-part.com but depending on your budget I would look at complete crate motors from Indy, Bouchillion, shophemi.com, etc. I really like the Indy 6.1 w/mod man intake and dual quads, best of both worlds IMO.
