I will be having my charger painted this winter and allthough she origonally is the bright blue color I love black and I was wondering what you guys think. Should I stick with the origonal blue or shoot her a beautifull gloss black. She allready has new interior which is black with the silver pleats in the seats (which is the origonal colors) and she has a black vinyl top.So she would be tripple black with the silver pleats and Then I was wondering how metallic silver stripes in the back would look or stick with white. Also I noticed most stripes are stuck on what about painted stripes with clear coat over them. What do you guys think, I like blue but have allways wanted a black charger and I allready have a restored blue 69 nova so I didnt really want another blue car.....Thanks in adavance.....Dave

It's your car, if you don't plan on selling it paint it whatever color you want. (Black is a good choice BTW!!!  :2thumbs:)
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

To people who like blue cars or people who can only stomach a car that is EXACTLY as it came from the factory, then yes the value will take a sharp kick in the crotch.  On the other hand, to anyone who likes black, the value is going to explode like a dropped cigarette in a firecracker factory.

I love Black too... To the "die hard purist", it will effect value, there probably will be negative comments too... Sometime supposedly as much as 20% with wrong color or non matching #'s... depends on the quality of the build... anyone else, "that's not a total die hard purist", that can't stand to see anything other than what came from the factory... the rest probably would like it... The silver stripe painted on, idea sounds cool too... like I said earlier, "the die hard purist wont like it thou".... IMHFO it's your car, do what makes you happy, screw the rest, especially if your not planning on selling it.... Life's too short to worry about that kind of stuff... good luck

We are in the same boat buddy. My 70 R/T was b5 white top, white inside with white longtitude stripes. I'm going tripple blackwith a red tail stripe. I just can't do b5. ifi t was b7 maybe i would have gone original color. Call me special, but i prefer F8 over blue.  I had a grabber blue fox body mustang for about 10 years. I'm done with blue lol.

Charger-Bodie

I love black too,BUT Dont paint it black unless you are ok with constant polishing to make the finish free of swirls.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

Love looking at black, hate owning it. Both our DDs are currently black and they are a headache to keep up with - on a Charger or other car you aren't going to bring out in inclement weather or drive everyday, probably better. I personally like the idea of the painted on stripes also - plan on doing it on my next project.

Agree.

My last 69 was black and I loved it.  I don't care if I had a Hemi Superbird (unless factory Alpine White) it would get painted black.

I'm in the same situation too Dave. I have a 68 R/T in blue with black interior and black vinyl roof and it's in the back of my mind to paint it black, but at this stage it will be staying blue.
I just can't justify the cost and effort and the fact that the current paint job looks top notch.
I've always wanted a black Charger, but figure I'll just look for a black one when I eventually buy a '69 as well.
Personally I don't care about devaluing the car as I never intend on selling and a triple black '68 is very sought after over here.
Do whatever you want, it's your car.
If you go ahead with it, don't forget to show us some before and after pictures.

My car came to me a virgin.        It was originally white but I took care of that. Now she's black and I love it. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Wow, a white virgin, how did you get so lucky?   :coolgleamA:

Paint it black, at least it wasn't green like mine  :shruggy:

Go for it Dave.
If you've already had a blue car then why argue with yourself. Its a hell of a colour to keep clean, I've developed arms like Popeye since I've owned this car, but yeah, its worthwhile. Funny enough, mine was originally QQ1 blue too and stripe delete, built Sept 7 1967 . But if it was still blue I'd be fine with it anyway, black cars do make a statement.
Probably won't hurt the value too much unless you were looking at the purist to sell it to.

Here's a few black Charger pics to keep you keen  ;)

Too funny.  I bought a Triple Black 69 RT because it was originally a Q5 Turquoise and will some day paint it back to its original Q5 color. It's a black top/interior stripe delete car.

It's your car do what you want. Unless you are trying to make this an investment vehicle (no pun intended). And in that case you are probably going to be upside down in the long run.  :Twocents:

Listen to him, it's a GIANT PITA. Black looks good I will give you that but isn't high on my list of favorites for this reason alone.

Do you have kids? If you do think of it this way - remember when they were babies and you had to deal with all the diapers and long nights? Isn't it much better to hold your friends kids now? It is, because when they start crying and filling their diapers you can give it back to them to deal with it. Let someone else paint it Black and deal with the problems and you can enjoy their hard work.

Thanks guys for all of the replies. Well after reading all of you posts and doing a bunch of thinking she is going to be BLACK I dont mind pollishing or having to keep her clean that comes with the territory :) Just need to decide now if I'm going with the silver metallic tail stripes or white and if I am going to have them painted on or use pressure sensetive vinyl. If they are the stick on and I dont like them its easier to change :)

Back N Black

I went from Green to Black and no regrets. :2thumbs:

Does it have A/C and do you live in a hot climate?   I thought about making my 68 triple black but then I realized I live in Tennessee and it doesn't have A/C.  That would cut the cruiseability down by a few months (like right now).  My DD is a black pickup truck WITH air and it's all I can do to keep from melting for the 10 seconds it takes me to start it and get the air running.

FWIW I'm still on the fence and probably will do it anyway.  I have to ask myself: Do I want to cruise less but smile more when I do, or cruise more and think 'Man I wish this car was black' the whole time?  You learn to live with what you love, warts and all.  You'll never be totally happy with a compromise.

I love black cars but will never own one again.  In reality, it looks real nice and shiny maybe 10 days out of the year.

I love my white car because it takes a very long time before people notice I haven't washed it in weeks.   :icon_smile_big:

It's your car, do with it as you like.

Nope no A/C and no I dont live in a hot climate 30 miles north of Seattle we get lots of rain here.It will only come out on nice dtas though.

I agree.

I know black will be a pita to keep clean and scratch free, but not like it will be a daily driver. All part of the game.

Dave27

I agree it comes with the territory :yesnod:
