I put a new 3/8 sending unit in my charger and a new stainless 3/8 line from back to front when I put the 493 in my car. I had a 5/16 in there and the gauge was fairly accurate. Now when the tank is full and I mean up to the top of the filler tube my gauge only reads 3/4 tank. What is the best way to correct this? Bending the float arm down to make the sender read higher?? Would like to know what is the best way to get my gauge reading close to where it should be. Thanks!!!!

Dino

The repro sending units are linear while the oem are non linear, that's why you don't get an accurate reading and bending the float arm will only give you a partial good reading, never correct over the entire line.

1HotDaytona's mod and one I will be doing myself.

Thanks Dino, I see exactly what he did and I still have my old 5/16 sending unit although I don't weld I have friends that do so I will plan on doing this pretty soon and getting my fuel gauge reading correctly! That's a great solution and better than what I was gonna try to do ;D

I don't have a welder either.  You 'could' secure the potentiometer in another way but nothing beats a good weld.  I'll take mine to my mechanic...accompanied by a box of donuts.   :icon_smile_big:

I got my sending unit out today and dug out my old 5/16 unit and got the gauge/ float part off of it and cut it loose and got the new 3/8 apart and got it ready to be welded up and once that is done and the reading strip soldered up it should be ready to go back in. Hopefully it will read like it did before I swapped it out since it was pretty close to accurate.  ;D

It should but test the resistance before you install it and see if both float arms are the same.

Got it back into the gas tank today but didn't have time to go get any gas, had to help my sister bury her chocolate lab. :'(  I got my gas jug in the van and i'm gonna get some gas tomorrow and see what the gauge looks like after I put 5 or 10 gallons of gas in it.

Just FYI here, but get rid of the little PLASTIC float that comes on all newer sending units. One day your gauge  will read, the next it will not.

I solder in some floats from newer cars for the Ethanol in fuel today.

Yes, I tossed the plastic float and used the brass one that was on my 5/16 sender. I'm not sure how accurate the gauge is gonna be at this point. I put 15 gallons in it and it is still below 3/4 of a tank. I am gonna go fill it up next week and see where it reads. hopefully it will go past 3/4 of a tank so at least it will read better than before!!
