need advice info for what type of rearend to start off with for building 1000hp

looking into starting my project 68 charger going to be doing a 8-71 supercharged (probably 440) 6 speed, but do not know what rearend to beef up for the power definetly would like to keep it all mopar. This is my first mopar as i have been going  gm, any info would be great thank

because I want to have that one insane car that is over the top and have wanted a 1968 charger seriously since I was 5. just sold my 1969 chevelle because it was a documented super sport and I didn't want to destroy a piece of history so I found a  1968 with one leg literally in the crusher and saved it

Dana 60 bolts right in.  Ford 9 in. works as well, but will require fabrication.

and definetly sounds like the dana 60 Is unanimous. sending it to the body shop for the 20k makeover in October trying to get everything mocked up before I do probably going with tubular a arms and a hotckis suspension it was really good on my chevelle. But going to be doing a set of coil overs on the front. It's pretty much a pro touring car without the upgraded interior I still want that 1968 feel on the inside

yah I know the ford is really tuff but would like to keep it all mopar. That's why I am also planning on going with a really built 727 with a gear vendor

Dana 60. However, you can make an 8 3/4 rear work with 1000 HP, just not the TORQUE to match with a dead hook. As long as you wanna spin from here to eternity, the 8 3/4 will live, but once you hear that 'Duct Tape' ripping upon launch, it's Dana 60 time.


BTW: You got any idea what kind of engine it will take for 1000 HP?  Going old skool V8[440 stroker]?
Aftermarket block for one thing...IF you want it to last more than a few trips/passes on the street/track. [$4-5K]

BTW: The Ever popular Ford 9" isn't as strong as people have you believe. They tend to sheer right at the yoke/front pinion bearing with trans brake.

That 'Rebuilt' 727 will never hold 1000 HP just simply rebuilt with shift kit. Basically, all you will be left with a case and a few internal parts at that power level.
Most likely a $3K transmission along with another $4500 For the GV OD unit. I know a Converter to withstand that kind of power alone is around $1200.00....

While I commend your efforts on the ultimate 1968 Charger powerplant, I think the term '1000 HP' is WAY too common these days with these $100K New, modded, SRT Challengers/Chargers/Jeeps. WAY too many are spending WAY to much to be able to say those few words. Afterall, For the $100K it takes to make that power, I'd rather have 4 bedrooms and a backyard. But, that's just me.

 I been playing around with the idea of a 1000 hp motor. If the Charger weights in at 3900 pounds and you can hook up your 1/4 mile would be around 9.66.

Now if you where to go only with 600 hp (way cheaper and less likely to make expressive sounds) ET would be 11.45.

Get the weight down to say 3400 ET with 600 HP would be 10.94.

I had $12,000 in my Blown 440 ( I did real careful shopping and found a great deal on a ready to go 6-71) and it made 645 HP over driven 10%. To hit the 1000 HP I can see $50,000 easy for the motor. No block I know of that Maw Mopar made will live at 1000 HP for long.

no it will be 1000hp that's my goal number dynoed at the flywheel just got back from my engine builder yesterday 525 ci probably 8-71 bds supercharger. I'm no rookie def know a stock trans with a shift kit is not gonna hold.http://727specialist.com/ the dr2 he has and a gear vendor for the freeway quoted a price of $5975 that's with a reverse manual valve body and trans brake. As far as the rear end not gonna chance grenading anything that I can help so def will be going with the dana 60 looks like summit sells the whole set up with disc breaks for 3300

also only spending 16500 without the blower for the build that includes all the good parts callies magnum 4.5 stroke crank. my engine guy does not rape me that's why he gets return business and the engines hold up. no leaks no breaks ran my 468 chevelle motor for 2 years hard (i'm 29) and no issues he also built a 496 for my brother 8200 rpm 3rd summer on that 800 hp only issue bearing went on a roller lifter but he helped repair at no labor cost. guy loves what he does

also running the new 426 hemi block from summit but still have to punch it out obviously. I'll post up pictures and receipts seriously this guy is awesome.

Oh it'll do it for a little while anyway, but I've NEVER met a machine shop that'll put together a 1000 HP engine and sponsor/warranty anything. Good luck.

i wish I had the cash for only a 600hp engine let alone 1k......then again im not a big power person in general.

An old, outdated, parts too heavy, junk 505" stroker 440.

Iron Block and heads. 11.0:1 compression and makes about 750 HP on Nitrous, around 550 HP on the motor. Been together for almost 20 years. Crank came out of one of the very first Hughes engines way back in the late 90's. 3" Collectors, with 3" full exhaust and "X" pipe. I run 3.91 Gear'd 8 3/4 rearend. Stock with axles cut and shortened out old Dodge state truck.
Runs on pump gas/race gas mix. Not driven daily, but not babied when driven either. Ran best of 6.50 ONE TIME. Ran half ass consistent, 6.90's 8th mile. ROUGHLY translates to high 10's/lower 11's 1/4 mile, in an A Body.

Pistons cost me back 1998, right at a grand. Custom [at the time] HEAVY by todays standards. Rods are some VERY old "H" beams. Crank had to have one rod journal turned .030. I slung it back together and have had fairly good luck with it.

BUT, I do not run this thing everyday like I stole it. I do beat on it when I drive it...

just wondering if you were running aluminum heads that seems like the hard thing to come by for mopar not many companys took on the task. 1974dodgecharger I built my 454 to 600hp for $6200 pan to carb

I got a 540 blown hilborn injected hemI that dynoed at 983HP with two pounds of boost. Cost over 30k just for motor. Not to mention rearend and trans I still have to buy. Big numbers are not cheap.  I think I am going to be afraid to drive it.  Installing custom toilet seat for interior. Good luck with the build..

Yep, and this is why Chevy is so loved. They are the "Wal-Mart" of cars. EVERYBODY builds them because EVERYBODY can afford to. Cheap, common as hell, and Cookie Cutter. You are in Mopar world now. No more 600-800 HP for peanuts. Go back to an LS motor with huge turbo that lasts about 5 passes if you want those "You Tube" numbers to post up. Here, we like for sh*t to last more than three weeks.

WAY too many have gotten bit by that "Wow, look, everybody made my sh*t go viral because I posted huge HP numbers up on YT" thing. Every time I see those things, FIRST thing I wonder is how much I coulda prolly paid off my house with and had some left over with what they have tied up in that vehicle making 1500 HP.

Don't believe the hype. That kinda power costs out the azz.
