Electrical gremlin is making my clock too fast

I know the clocks are not accurate and mine was always a little fast.  I usually had to turn it back about 5-10 minutes when the car sat for a day or two.  I will do the quartz upgrade eventually but it didn't really bother me that it would do this.

Now it's a different story.  My clock no longer advances a few minutes but several hours!  Last time I checked the clock was almost 6 hours ahead and that was 2 days after resetting it.  My amp meter is also showing me that the battery is draining.  I don't have issues starting or driving but the ammeter usually didn't move much from it's middle position and now it's to the far right for a while until it slowly comes back while driving.

So why is my clock all of a sudden trying to drain my battery?

I believe yours is like my 67 (was) and they have points of sorts in them that touch now and again to give a little charge and "wind" the clock (so to speak).  Sounds like they are most likely fused together.

Yes, and it will work for a while - but if you are going to go through all the trouble to pull the dash ... fix it once in for all (in my mind anyway)

Oh I see how this works.  So would it be reasonable to assume the battery is draining a bit because the points are at continuous contact?

Yes it would.  If they stick a bit, the battery current is what will fuse them and compound the problem. (battery continues to drain slightly which continues to burn the contacts which continue to...)

I'm sorry the clock is 'broke' but I'm real happy this is the only issue here!  Quartz upgrade was a matter of time anyway.
