Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Did you check for chunks of corn in your fuel tank? :popcrn:

RIDELIKEHELL

Have you checked the fuel pressure somewhere along the line?
The symptoms tend to say too much fuel. But not enough could be as well. A gas smell when the car stops sure seems like rich but not a good tell.
Let's say the diaphragm in the pump was leaking. It would not pump so well and would vent to the crank case.
I am reaching for straws with this thought but have had much stranger things happen.
Example--Driving at speed on the freeway (70 charger rt pulling a trailer) The engine quit as though I turned it off. There was no slowing or miss of any kind. I knew it was an ignition problem by the way it felt. I was wrong. The top of the fuel pump broke completely off.
One thing is for sure, when you find the trouble it will be something simple that was overlooked or disregarded.
Another thing about these issues is they never crop up again. It is always something else.

Time to check the fuel pressure and see what's going on there.  :scope:

The fuel pump and/or pump pushrod are likely suspects.  :yesnod:

edit ; looks like ws23rt beat me to the punch....fuel pressure/pump needs to be looked at closely

Hey Ron
It looks like we are thinking alike. There is not much left to look at

RIDELIKEHELL

Thx ..Ron had told me to check the fuel pressure but was hoping it was that vapor separator.I needed to get a fuel  filter put in line anyway so I know what to check next :2thumbs:

Hi Bruce....yep we're on the same page here  :yesnod:

Funny thing is that it was running great last week and now this again. I'm frustrated for Marc because all these gremlins have been surfacing at the same time.  :P There was some dirt in the carb and now the floats ar set-up properly and the carb is clean. New fuel filter will keep any debris from the needle/seat so that issue is resolved. It's got to be fuel delivery at this point and the pump & pushrod are all that is left !

I've never had a mechanical fuel pump failure but have seen it happen to others.  :P

Fuel delivery starts at the pickup in the tank. A kink in the fuel line could flow enough sometimes and be restricted at others by debris in the line.
It has not happened in my experience and that puts it higher on the list of possibilities.
When I was getting my 69 coronet ready to run I blew air through the old fuel line and got liquid stuff out the other end. This line sat for 40 years.
My thinking is there could be more than liquid in the line.

RIDELIKEHELL

Everything is new as far as fuel lines, gas tank etc.....Hoping to check the fuel pressure soon but I wish I would've pulled the fuel pump off when I had it exposed as I will have to take the alternator off again but heck I'm becoming quite the shade tree mechanic  thx guys  :2thumbs:

This is the pump i need?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crt-m6935/overview/make/dodge

I think this is the one Shawn put in the car and it says it could put out 6-8 psi max and the Edelbrock Carbs don't like more than 7 psi

that's the one you were telling me about that  you can replace the diaphragm if need be down the road... I'm taking it into a local speed shop Wednesday to get my front suspension and everything checked over so I will recommend getting that one if that's the issue or something equivalent.

Curious.....does the new filter plumb in the same way as the separator?.....meaning the return line is coming out the side now instead of bottom?
my local speed shop sells them for $8 but wasn't sure it would replace the other unit..

Tilar

Sounds like a stuck or saturated float more than anything else. Why else would it keep dripping fuel in the carb without it running?

We've had the carburetor off & apart 2 times  to check everything as per Edelbrock trouble shooting  :shruggy:

Yes instead of the return and carb feed coming out of the top the return to tank comes out the side on the NAPA filter

I use the same pump Ron recommended.  Had a 6903 pump on my car for 24 years with never a problem until this spring, I got a rebuild kit from Mancini and it didn't fit my old pump.  New diaphragm was too small, Mancini's had "never heard that before", just my luck.  Ended up getting a new pump from them.
I never have a vapor lock or fuel delivery issue using that pump.  It's been a good one.

Invoice for original pump.  $38.69 in 1989, paid $109 in '13! ha ha ha

Old pump diaphragm.

Yep we are about 150 miles a part right down I-90.

RIDELIKEHELL

Had the car towed into the local speed shop at the direction of my friends that we helping me out. They checked the voltage to my ignition coil and it was low so they looked deeper. Turns out there was a loose connection to my ammeter in the dash that obviously wasn't done right when I got the car and proceeded to go in and out on me causing bad spark :brickwall: I really think the builder should be on the hook for this BS as I have been  stressed and inconvenienced a lot of the past 6 months. It explains why it was fouling the plugs and causing the car to flood out. My carb was completely disassembled again at their shop but it is running way to rich so they ordered a jet kit to lean it out. It was smoking hot here today and i drove the car 40 miles home without a hitch. I am also going to do the M.A.D coversion in the dash as well as the headlight relay upgrade and replace the ammeter with a voltage meter down the road. Hope to do some cruising now as the car ran strong today

Don't you feel better that you now know what the problem was. Going though these "mystery" problems can really stress you a lot.  Good to hear that you're on the road again.
