Again!! ::)

There was a thread about young drivers and insurance way back, cant find it now.

First time she slid off the road, did in the front end of her Mothers car (icey that day), so was a "no fault" thing...did not affect the insurance rates.

This time...and it scared the crap outta me...she blew a stop sign and was t-boned! She's okay..thank god for that, was more scared than anything else, don't blame her....was in her mothers car again! She was hit hard enough to deploy the other drivers airbags, but none went off in the one she was driving, she was charged this time. Thankfully it was a quiet street and just a stop sign....the other car was going slow....always think about the "what ifs"...know what I mean?

If that would have been a red light on a highway, might not have my little girl anymore!

Kinda not making sence right now, sorry, but need to tell someone, so I put it up here!

JB400

Lesson for the day, stop at every stop sign, no matter how busy the road is.

Glad she's alright :2thumbs:

Ram07

Thinking there is just too many gadgets, she was distracted (no excuse), but you know what I mean....can't find the right song on the Ipod, maybe a call on the cell...hell, the car has a computer screen in the dash....who knows!

Of course she could have just been a teenage girl yapping too much!

Thanks, she is fine, so far...now has to deal with the wrath of the mother!!!

Her driving days are over for a long time!

A383Wing

damn..glad she didn't get hurt...

some here may take offence to what I am about to say next, and I'm sorry if it does....but the youth of today needs to spend more attention on what they are doing like driving a car instead of concentrating on what they are gonna be doing when they get there....I have told this to my kids & grandkids constantly

Take a deep breath Ram....she's alive....cars can be replaced, kids can't

They have the attention span of a mop these days....cant drive at all...no need to think....they have little lights that blink when a car is in a blind spot...little bells that go off when they back up and are too close to something...mirrors, what are they? Ya don't use them when backing up....just look at the screen on the dash!!

Too bad there wasn't a sensor for an upcoming stop sign!

Not concerned about a car, but, that being said....anyone wanna buy a 2012 Camry....high mileage, new bumper, hood, drivers side fender....a couple  of new doors, and a drivers side quarter panel....trunk lid and new back bumper...will look like new, again....soon!  :2thumbs:

Ram,  this is how fathers get gray hair.    She's under 18 right?   Does this mean she looses her license?

2 outta 3 Skip...she is under 18(until Sept), did she cause the old man to go grey? Well, all I can say is before her, I had Brown hair...kinda going grey now, but still have a full head of it!

No, she never lost her licence, however she did lose her driving privileges, she wrecked her Moms car twice, this one is big, she was charged....I'm sure the insurance is gonna take a big hit,  I just can't afford to keep her insured!

Then we still have to consider the "you dumbass factor" in there as well! She screwed up....so yeah, grounded!

Main thing is...she's okay!

A383Wing

guess her next car is gonna have large truck inner tubes attached all the way around?

Bryan

Ram07

thinking a new pair of running shoes, and a bus pass!!! :icon_smile_big:

A383Wing

yea..that would work as well.....time to wake-her-up I guess.....driving is a privilege, not a right

as I read this thread...sounds like this may be an "ongoing" issue with the cars?

Bryan

Ram07

I havent seen the car yet, can't find it....but...to get t-boned, the other car crumpled, air bags went off, no one was hurt...the camry's doors still opened etc...something to be said about safety, just get rid of nonsense crap that is not needed in a car...know what I mean?

Very happy she is alright, but it may have been much worse as you said. When my kids started driving they had cell phones but IPODs and all that crap was not around yet.. CD's and STEREOs were though.. My rule for them was if they wanted to drive they were going to put all their attention on DRIVING. Cell phones were for emergencies and never to be answered while driving. I made the point with them while they were learning to drive with me or going anywhere around town. NO ONE could answer a phone while the car was in motion.. If a phone rang and they thought it was important we would pull over. If we pulled over and answered a phone and it was not important they lost 1 month of driving... NO, we never had to pull over.. They would not even look at their phones!!!

The stereo was next. They had seen me pull codes on cars many times. I explained that there was a BLACK BOX in the car that recorded everything. If the radio was turned on and how high the volume was. If the volume was changed and what to. So they each had to have minimum 3 months under their belts with no radio at all..  If I pulled info from the BLACK BOX and it showed the radio on they lost the car for 1 year. Then had to take classes again to learn how to drive and do it without the radio.

Then came LIGHTS and STOP SIGNS.. Back to the BLACK BOX. I explained that every stop sign and stop light has rules. In Florida we have a 3 second rule.. In STEVE P.S cars we have a 6 second rule. And again, don't let me pull up info that they DID NOT STAY STOPPED for at a minimum 6 seconds... When I ride with them today I want to yell at them to GO!!!!!!!! lol..

That did not stop either of my girls from raking up a few speeding tickets and a red light that I am sure was due to them shortening the yellow.. We all travel that light and I know they did.. Many lights around here I might add.. They have both been in wrecks, but the worst ones have been getting hit from behind while they were completely stopped. Those were ALL due to changing CD's, chasing a cell phone on the floor of the passengers side of a RANGE ROVER and another was texting.. NONE of them were my kids doing so....

The road is a scary place for parents of kids driving.  :o

The road is a scary place period.  In one city block, I had to dodge a lady in a Ford minivan that wasn't paying attention leaving her home; and just around the corner, was a guy that backed into a disconnected nat. gas line painted yellow while driving a k car New Yorker. :P  On the other hand, I went to the local dirt track and the cars were running 3 wide and not banging on each other :shruggy:  Amazing how well people can drive when they do pay attention.

What's this deal about you paying her insurance Ram?  I was told to pay my own if I wanted to drive.

Ram07

She only works at a corner store, she makes $11.25/hr, going up to $11.50 this summer, her mother takes most of it and banks it for her tuition  in the fall.
She needs to come up with another 6k by Sept.

It was only an extra $60 a mth to get her as an occasional driver on both cars, the ex and I split that...

We have a "loaner teenager" living with us and we have one hard and fast rule for her with the car.  If she gets caught texting and driving she will lose the car and the phone.  She is responsible for any fines she gets and any grown up driving issues.  She is an excellent driver for her experience level.  She's had her license for a year and a half with no problems.  When she had her learners permit I took her to a StreetSmart teen driving course at Brainerd International Racetrack and let them show her some more realistic issues with the car.  Also the car she drives is a stick shift to help keep her thoughts on the driving.

Driving is a teens first real grownup experience and I think they need all the skills and education they can get.

I'm a real prick about defensive driving habits but 20 years ago my wife and 16 year old daughter were killed by a distracted driver.

Ram07, thank god your daughter was not seriously hurt. Driving is something that requires complete attention. Some people are not ready for that level of concentration until later in life, and others seem to loose it as the years pass. My wife just found out that her mother was not able to get her license renewed a couple months ago. She isn't really that old, mid 70's? She told my wife the driving test guy made her nervous..... and yelled. I am giggling inside, but it is no laughing matter really. So far she has not gone back to re-test.

Thanks, I appreciate the sentiments and I usually don't make an issue of the loss.  I got through it.  You never get over it.

I just meant to make the point that a moment of distraction behind the wheel can change someone's life forever.  Teen drivers are still a high risk group and it's OK to supervise their driving.  We were very cautious about letting our "loaner child" get experience as she could handle it.  She is competent in most Minnesota weather and makes the occasional 300 mile winter road trip to visit her grandparents.  We watch the weather and discuss driving hazards before she gets in the car.

She's not a perfect driver, but she knows what is expected of her and the consequences of poor choices.
