Fan Motor in Engine Compartment

In trying to clean-up my engine compartment, I tried to remove the Fan Motor.  The instruction state to remove the 3 small screws around the motor.  These screws go in radial.  I did that and nothing moved.  Prying will only damage the firewall sheet metal.  I thought that removing the 3 forward nuts would provide more viability.    It didn't help.  I then un-screwed the 3 standoff bumpers to see better.  Bad idea.  Any captive nuts were not captive, and fell someplace.

Now that I have done everything wrong, how do I get the whole motor off.

That ring has to come off.  It might be bonded in place???  I am thinking about a heat gun???   :brickwall: :brickwall:

fan motor comes out with heater-AC box as an assembly. You cannot remove fan motor by itself from engine compartment

those screws that the nuts fell into heater box...fan cage is still attached to fan motor shaft...

a service manual would be your friend here...now you gotta take the entire heater box out of car to fix this

The service manual started to get me in TROUBLE!

Hmmm...has never worked for me....have always had to take heater box and motor out as a unit, then separate motor from heater box

IIRC you need to remove the heater box to remove the blower motor on a NON-A/C car.  :scratchchin:
On an A/C car, you should be able to remove the blower motor from the engine compartment side.
However... and this would suck, but you might have to remove the box now to get those insulators out. I believe they have metal threaded studs in them, so you might get lucky with a telescopic magnet & fishing them out instead.

The rubber ring is not bonded to anything, it's probably just stuck to the back of the motor from age. You could try a heat gun, maybe that would help.
Can you see if the mouse cage (fan) is holding it up??

The rubber seal insulator and plate are fine.  The 3 rubber bumpers have threads on both ends and I removed them.  the end that screws into the ring, that I need to remove, and was held in place by some form of clip that was not attached to anything (like a washer).  When I un-screwed the bumpers from the ring, that "washer" fell off.  I don't think that the washers will damage anything if left in there but they could rattle when driving over bumps, if that ever happens!

The ring (with rubber stand-off bumpers) that is supposed to come off (per the service manual) supports the whole blower motor.

The fan that is attached to the shaft of the motor won't fit through the hole in the ring.  That ring has a cross-section shape like the number seven (7), which may be seen in the picture.

I tried a heat gun and tried prying/pulling it off with a paint can cover remover, that has a small end that can catch edges.
The motor CAN_NOT go in through the ring and the fan CAN-NOT come out through the ring.
The Ring Has To Come OFF!

I am not familiar with everything behind the dash but if I managed to get into the heater box and remove the fan off the shaft of the motor, the ring may be driven off from the inside.  I don't know.  Bigger job than I anticipated!!! :brickwall:

The heat gun had no effect and I am trying not to use a propane torch.

Any other suggestions??  I assumed others have gone through removing the motor and found a way.

The blower motor fan cage should fit thru the large round opening in the firewall.
Once it's out as an assembly, the cage can be removed from the motor, and THEN the ring comes off. The ring, cage, motor all go in as an assembly.

I think I agree with what you said.  The picture that I just attached shows what I call the "Flange Cover".  If it comes off, I believe everything behind it will come out through the hole in the firewall.  BUT, I can't get that "Flange/Cover off.  I removed the 3 screws that the service manual referred to but it doesn't budge.  The heat gun had no affect.  It bothers me to use a torch but I may have to unless there is a better suggestion????

well, if ya end up breaking it, I gots a complete motor & fan with cage here if ya need one. The way mine here looks, the 3 large forward nuts are still attached to mine and there are 3 on the inside as well. I bet those dropped inside now. I guess I had my AC heater box & non-AC heater boxes mixed up....sorry about that

Scroll down in this thread to see how the blower motor comes out....just like the service manual says....three screws & out as an assembly.

It might be frozen on with some sealer but it will come out from the front....

Your Right!
The Manual was right
With a lot of yanking, prying, tugging, banging, etc.  It finally came off.
The three 1-thread nuts were laying in the box.
Thank you
John
