Anyone, when I come to a stop in 1st gear, there is a sound from the bell housing (727) trans. right under my right foot that sounds like the torque converter hitting the bell housing or something like that. When car is level or facing downhill noise is there. If car is facing uphill there is no noise. Sounds like the teeth on the converter hitting -brrrrrrrrr - sound. Once moving sound is gone. Sound has progressively become worse over a few months. 71 Charger with BB 426 max wedge 727 trans.

Driving me crazy. Anyone experienced this?  Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks guys :'(

flex plate to torque converter bolts loose or backed out?
worn thrust bearings?
loose inspection cover?

Just 3 ideas off the top of my head

Checked your starter?  Sounds like maybe bendix is hitting flywheel.  Or, is the splashshield been caved in, hitting the flywheel?  If that shield isn't in place, could be something in there hitting on something.   :shruggy:

Won't know unless you crawl under and look.  Good luck :2thumbs:

I thought starter, but he said "uphill, no noise" so to me that would mean the bendix would not be trying to go down into the flexplate

Noise was only in "downhill" mode...which means torque converter was moving forward somehow?

Worst case scenario, the crankshaft thrust bearing is wasted and allowing the crank to move forward/backward too much. Grab the lower crank pulley and pull/push real hard....any movement more than a few thousandths is trouble.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thanks for the info. I'll try all of the ideas.

Thanks everyone!

Most likely flex plate to convertor bolts, same thing happened on my car. I even had it happen on an F-150 but do Johns check first as that is critical.  :2thumbs:
