I was reading through my old Chiltons manual . There was a rear identification  table . It showed that an 8 and 3 quarter rear  is welded and an 8 1/4  has ten bolts holding a cover. Both have drain / oil access plugs toward the front. Can I rely on that to confirm that I have an 8-3/4 rear?

That will work thanks. Any info on possible gear ratio or locking or non locking rear?

If the rear end is unmolested you might find ratio and Sure-Grip tags under the nuts that secure the pumpkin to the housing.

If not, both are easy to check; jack one wheel clear of the ground and, with the trans in Neutral and the brakes released, try to turn the tire...if it turns it's not Sure-Grip.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Doesn't sure grip mean limited slip? ....limited slip rear wheels turn independently.  Locking.....both wheels turn together ( posi) ?  Do I have it backwards or not at all. :shruggy:

Mopar Nut

Sure grip (Mopar version) is like a Posi rear, but better.

limited slip will turn both wheels under load or if driving wheel slips. Posi rears (chevy) are limited slip also.

Thank you all for responding.
I found a casting # 2881489. I lifted the rear (both wheels off the ground). when I turned one wheel, the other wheel turned in the opposite direction ( NOT a sure grip). There was a tag held by 2 screws that read....2170 I'm not sure this represents the gear ratio.
