Can't decide on pulling the trigger on a 70 Charger. Advice?

Hi Folks,

First off, I've been checking in here over the past year or so, but haven't posted much. I think this is a great site with great people and filled with a wealth of information.

I've loved Chargers since I can remember, but am only now in a position to buy one. My plan was to keep on eye on the market and buy a car within 2-3 years. I was looking to spend $25k-$30k for a 70 Charger R/T 440, preferably plum crazy. I'm not concerned with numbers matching, but was hoping to find something already to drive. Small repairs ok, but no projects. Well I've been looking for a little over a year now, and have come across something in my neighbourhood. It's a white 70 r/t 440, numbers matching, auto, white vinyl roof, restored a few years ago. Very clean car. The owner is looking for $40,000. The car is exactly what I've been looking for, except the colour. I was hoping for plum fc7 instead of ew1. In addition, I'd be paying for numbers matching, which I wasn't looking for but can appreciate. I was hoping for your thoughts on pulling the trigger on this car. Is $40k a fair price? Or should I hold out for a plum crazy car that may not be available in the near future?

On another note, I just noticed an 70 fc7 rt 440 survivor on ebay for $50k. Seems a little steep, but I'm not sure. Thoughts?

Get the fc7 one, its what you want, youve waited a long time, you likely deserve it so just get what you really want.

Don't think I can afford the $50k plus the shipping for the ebay fc7. It would be a stretch for the ew1 at $40k. Are my $25k-$30k expectations out of reach?

Every 40+ year old car is unique so price variations are also. Given you'll except purple over numbers match running gear I think your "range" is fully reasonable. Just be fussy about overall condition!  Look deep before committing.

I say make yourself happy.  If you can live with the white one, get it.  If you want the purple one and don't mind spending the money, get it.  Concerning your budget, both cars are over it.  Maybe you should look at other cars as well.

Whatever you do, don't get in a hurry and buy a car your not happy with.  Take your time, you'll find the right one

That FC7 '70 on ebay right now gets reposted over and over.  It is a very nice car but is slightly overpriced for it's condition.  You might be able to get it cheaper.

If a car is already restored & numbers matching, probably the last thing you want to do is take it apart & repaint it again. An incorrect color on an otherwise numbers matching car may even hurt value in some cases.
FC7 '70 Chargers (or Chargers repainted that color) are out there, you just have to keep looking. I see them pop up on eBay from time to time. Check any collector car classifieds you can.

Since you're budget is 25 - 30k but you're willing to go look at one for $40k, I'd make that guy on ebay an offer of $32,500 while mentioning the dent in the left front fender and the hood insulation is messed up. Did it have mice in it? Also make it with the stipulation that when you get there it passes your inspection with no other dents or issues. That should let him know that you know about these old cars and know it's not worth 50k. He'll probably come back with an offer of 40. Then counter with whatever figure you feel comfortable with. I'm thinking $35 will buy that one.

isnt fc7 like the most popular color on 70s? so there are a LOT of them out there. changing a color will be costly and hurt the value so look for one thats a real plum crazy car.

what do u ppl think about that tx9 that a dealer has on ebay? doesnt sell for 36k, must be something wrong with it..

I've read that FC7 was the most popular hi-impact color on a Charger in 1970.

buying a charger for 40k - 50k you better love it, that includes the color. that car better be very close to perfect for a non Hemi car.

just make sure it is what it appears to be. in the end hobbies cost money so if you change your mind in a year a small loss won't sting as much

i tend to buy cheaper cars because i like improveing them. i would do the same to a 40k car which would make me upside down real quick.

if i lived in the us and didn't have to pay about another 10 000 in shipping /import charges i would have that charger it's ALL there and thats the hardest thing to find   right colour right options  yea

Get what you want and dont let others tell you others wise and dont sway yourself to 'compensate' for something else.

Sit on your cash until you find the perfect one and pounce on it!!!

Theres members on here who been waiting for 2 years to find the right one and they dont regret it at all.

If you are not concerned with "numbers matching" status, are you also flexible on the car being an authentic R/T?  To me, the pedigree of a car isn't nearly as important as how solid and complete it is. I prefer to build cars the way that I like them rather than buy finished ones, so a complete base model is more appealing. In your case, would you be interested in a "500" model with all of the equipment that an R/T had?
My car left the factory as an F8 green "500" model with a green interior, 4 wheel drum brakes and a 318. I paid $1700 in March 2000 and drove it home.  I could have saved some money by going with a stock 440 and rally wheels, but I built the car to suit my tastes. Good luck.

Well, happy Valentines Day to me. After looking at the EW1 rt 440 his weekend and much thought, I went ahead and bought it!!!! Super pumped. The car is immaculate. Pictures don't do it justice. Thanks for all your advice/opinions. Gave me a lot to think about, but in the end it was a great car that I had to have! I'll try and get some pics up this weekend and post in another thread.
