When our cars were new or a few years old, what were the typical modifications that were made? I have been toying with making some modifications to my '69 that would have been common from '69-the early 70's.
I have been figuring on installing a Sun tach on the steering column, some 14" aluminum slot wheels and headers. What other mods did guys do back then? Pictures would be great to see.

Headers, wheels, carb, fuzzy dice. My dad says his cars never made it a week without the first two.

I'll eventually get a '70 driver.  My plan is to start out as stock as possible (depends a bit on the starting point) and do 40 years of upgrades in about 5 years.  I specifically want the experience of feeling a stock car transform into the best it can be today - well in about 5.5 years from now.  So I'm interested to hear about mods!

Shackles or air shocks.

This might have been 5 or 6 years down the road. . . crushed velvet interior. I can not tell you have many Chargers I looked at back in the early nineties which still had the velvet interior from 20 years prior. And maybe a set of home stereo speakers thrown in the back seat.  :2thumbs:

Typically6, what I see from old pics in magazines, were Traction bars, Air shocks, N-50 Tires, Cragar S/S mags, Side pipes, Headers, Hood scoops (Snorkel "Pro Stock" style), Shackles out back, glasspacks, Chain link steering wheels, Diamond tuck interior, Handcuffs hangin' from the rearview, etc.  few actually had anything actually done to the engines, but looked "Cool".

Look up aftermarket parts from the 70's, they just used what's available and many went way overboard, just like kids are doing with their cars today.

I say go with wheels, shackles, headers and a stereo and you'll be close to what a real charger looked like back then.  14" slot mags with a not too wide tire will give you that typical 70's look.

My first addition was always a skinny blond in a tube top and Ditto jeans.
