So I backed the car out of the garage last night into the -14 whether.  I let it idle as I changed the oil and installed my winter tires.

When I drive the difficult old thing back in it is steaming and boiling.  Both electric fans where on the whole time.  It is set up that way  since I broke the sensor.  You can here it  sucking air at the thermostate housing.

There was enough stream to set of the smoke alarm.  I said oh great.  jacked it up and drained the engine oil.  I figured I might as well since it was already up to temp.

Do look into you're crystal balls boys.  Have I screwed it?.

sounds like the coolant froze in the radiator   Had one do that driving down the road.  antfreeze was only set for 10 above zero.

What kind of vehicle are we talking bout here? Has the coolant been flushed in the last 10 years? Since you rigged the fans, was it low on coolant/water? Did you check the Coolant to see if it was good protection? (Temp).

Just got back from vacation so I'll check the coolant a little later this week.  I'm in Ontario Canada.  The temperature according to my wife was minus 8.  I'll check that later too.  I'm using a phone to respond so it would be better on the laptop.

Wouldn't the coolant in the block unfreeze in a hurry if it was?

On the initial start and run, no.  It's going to do exactly what it did.  Once you shut it off, the radiator will thaw out and then it will be good to go.  Sounds like you need to add more anti freeze.  Which reminds me.......
