Mopar Vin Decoder iPhone App - pretty neat

I've been thinking about making an app like this for Android and a search brought me across this which I thought was pretty neat.  Anyone here used it?

Disclaimer:  That said, I don't own an iPhone, so I have no idea what other stuff this app might collect (such as geo location information) and store so by all means use with caution.    In other words, don't go out and use it to look up the VIN on your 150K wing car before checking the settings to see if it might not be broadcasting the location of said 150K car first.

How are you coming with the Android version?

Just 6T9 CHGR

Chris' '69 Charger R/T

Ghoste

Oooh, Chris there needs to be a 1969 version of that.

ODZKing

Hmm, wonder if there is a Windows8 version of that app?   :scratchchin:

Just checked ... sure is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   :boogie:

How are you coming with the Android version?

Not even close to starting Ghoste, the first rule of engineering and programming is to see if there's already something out there that does the same thing.   This is the logical version of 'don't reinvent the wheel'.  Since there's not a strictly Android version of the app then I moved on to the 'I might do that'.  It's really just an excuse for me to learn how to program specifically for Android, which if I'm doing it in my spare time will take a while.

I first thought of the idea when I saw people posting pics of old junkyard cars and thought 'A database of these old hulks complete with fender tags would be sweet, and an app to make that easy for people to add would be even sweeter'.   An app to add junkers to a 68 Charger registry was the original idea. That was followed quickly by the realization that having random people running around and documenting the location of junk Chargers would surely lead to people documenting good cars or old 'fixerup one day' cars (even if they meant no harm), possibly in driveways or in public, and opening up a whole can of worms if that data ever got out.  So I sighed and and went back to 'eh, maybe just a tag decoder to practice coding afterall' and that's the stage I'm in now, the 'maybe I'll do it soon' phase :)

That said, where's the definitive 'list' of all tag options etc on Chargers so I can build a database?  Is it all in one place anywhere?

Wow, it sures makes my repeating thoughts of "what should I have to eat" and "I wonder what she looks like naked" seem a little trivial.

Homerr

What would be awesome would be an app where one takes a close up pic of the fender tag and it recognizes the letters/numbers and auto-decodes it.

Ghoste

I'm not sure if they are definitive, but the 69 registry site and the 70 one both have an extensive list for their respective years.

That's doable, but beyond my current capacity as a fledgeling programmer :)
